Upper Davidson River Brevard Whitewater Paddling: When it comes to whitewater paddling, Brevard is hard to beat. As one of the Eastern U.S. only temperate rainforests, as well as over 500,000 acres of protected forests full of creeks, rivers and waterfalls, it’s easy to see why Transylvania County is known as The Land of Waterfalls. One of the best whitewater options after a modest rain event is the Upper Davidson. Put in near the Cove Creek Campground and watch out for Whale’s Back, the biggest, most dangerous rapid on the run, and enjoy the Class III+ boogie water down to the Fish Hatchery. This is a great run to self-shuttle with bikes and do multiple times in a day.
Directions from Brevard: From the main intersection at the entrance of Pisgah Forest drive 5.2 miles north on 276 into the forest, and turn left on the paved Forest Road 475 towards the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Eduction. Drive 3.2 miles and park on the left just before the pavement ends at the 1 lane bridge. The gated road to begin the hike (and into the group camp area) is on the right.
