Whitewater Falls

Whitewater Falls Hiking

Whitewater Falls Hiking: Whitewater Falls is believed by many to be the highest waterfall east of the Mississippi River and is measured at 411′ in height. The multi-tiered waterfall is easily accessible by car and provides a quarter mile walkway to an overlook. Additional overlooks are available for those looking to explore more with options to head down to the base of the falls for those who are looking for a true adventure. The area requires a $2 cash fee per person to access, so it is best to be prepared as the closest convenience store is around 10 miles away in Sapphire.

For those looking to get wet, a set of trails leads from a lower overlook to the river and offers the opportunity to access the river where there are several swimming holes and large rocks for relaxing. The trail is steep and difficult and should only be attempted by experienced hikers who don’t mind taking the paths less traveled. Once at the river, options for further exploration include the Foothills Trail, a 70-mile backpacking trail that traverses the North Carolina/South Carolina state line.
