Adventure Guide to Cruising through Resurrection Bay

  • Wildlife and Glacier Cruise
One of the most popular tours is the Kenai Fjords Tours – Wildlife and Glacier Cruise. Departing from the Seward Boat Harbor, this excursion takes you deep into Resurrection Bay and even as far as Kenai Fjords National Park. You'll see tidewater glaciers such as Bear Glacier or Aialik Glacier extending into the sea. Along the way, watch for orcas, sea lions, and bald eagles. Boats feature heated cabins, restrooms, and viewing decks for comfort.

  • Fox Island Day Trip
Cruises that include a stop at Fox Island are highly recommended for a well-rounded day. Fox Island offers a secluded, scenic stop where visitors can enjoy a salmon bake lunch, beach walks, and kayaking opportunities. The crystal-clear waters around the island are ideal for viewing jellyfish, starfish, and kelp forests from above. Tour operators also provide commentary about the island's geology and history.

  • Self-Guided Kayak Tours
Those seeking a more intimate experience on Resurrection Bay can rent kayaks and paddle alongside its fjord walls. You’ll pass by natural features like Caines Head State Recreation Area, home to WWII-era military ruins, and Tonsina Creek, known for colorful salmon runs when in season.

Local Insights

The bay got its name from Russian explorers, who reportedly entered its calm waters on Easter Sunday. Its abundance of marine life is due to nutrient-rich upwelling currents, making it a hotspot for eco-tourism.

There is plenty to see and experience in the Resurrection Bay. The Resurrection Bay is the entrance and exit out of Seward Alaska. Visitors could do kayaking, glacial, and whale tours. The cruise ships and coal ships coming in and out of here often. I think you'll see mostly fishing by the locals, but that doesn't mean visitors can't fish either - just get a fishing license and a lottery ticket (if lottery is active).

The Resurrection Bay Tour was just a wonderful treat to watch about 15-20 humpback whales bubble net feeding up close and personal. Some moments were just breathtaking and majestic for us people in awe on the boat. I am definitely recommending this 4-5 tour tour! Captain was extremely experienced.

This place is just amazing. Had a kayaking experience. Plan a rail trip too when in Alaska. Alaska railroad is enjoyable journey. I had been on this rail from Anchorage to Seward. Most of the road goes parallel with the bay. However, there are some places at the back of mountain where only the train goes. So, no matter which means you choose, you are gonna enjoy this ride
