The Santa Rosa Sound offers some of the best paddling experiences in northwest Florida. This calm, protected body of water runs between the Gulf of Mexico and the mainland, making it an ideal spot for kayakers, paddleboarders, and canoeists of all skill levels. With crystal-clear waters, abundant wildlife, and breathtaking views, paddling in this area provides a unique way to experience Navarre’s natural beauty. Whether you're seeking a relaxing excursion or an active adventure, the Sound offers diverse environments, from open water to secluded coves and winding estuaries.
Adventure Guide to Paddling on the Santa Rosa Sound
1. Navarre Beach Marine Park
This launch site on the eastern end of Navarre Beach provides a great starting point for paddlers. The calm waters here allow beginners to practice without strong currents.
Expect to see dolphins, rays, and a variety of coastal birds while gliding over the shallow grass beds.
Amenities include restrooms, picnic areas, and parking.
2. Blackwater River Paddling Trail (Lower Section)
While technically part of the Blackwater River, this section feeds into the Santa Rosa Sound and offers a mix of freshwater and coastal scenery.
Kayakers can enjoy gently flowing water leading into rich estuaries, where redfish and mullet are commonly spotted.
Best accessed from the Blackwater Landing area for a smooth ride toward the Sound.
3. Soundside Park and Navarre Beach Causeway
A favorite among locals, this area provides easy access with kayak and paddleboard rentals nearby.
Paddle under the bridge for a unique perspective of Navarre, or stick to the shoreline to explore small inlets and sandbars.
On calm mornings, this spot is perfect for wildlife viewing, with herons and pelicans frequently making an appearance.

The smaller beach sections on the Sound side are a great accompaniment to the Gulf side beaches. Sometimes the water on the Gulf side isn’t the best for swimming for any number of reasons, that’s a great time to head to the sound. The fishing is just as fun but is different than the Gulf side, and you get some really nice sunsets. You can rent jet skies and boats and other rideables. The Wibit Water bounce park is a must for your kids, located at the base of the Navarre Beach Bridge at Navarre Family Watersports.
