Coastal Cruising: Biking the Sullivan’s Island Loop

Biking the Sullivan’s Island Loop is one of Charleston’s most picturesque and relaxing outdoor activities, perfect for anyone seeking a mix of Lowcountry charm, ocean views, and a touch of history. This breezy ride, roughly 4 miles in length, takes you through quiet residential streets, past historic landmarks, and along scenic beachfronts, offering a quintessential slice of island life.

Your journey begins at Station 10, a central point with ample parking near the island’s lighthouse. From here, pedal along tree-lined streets bordered by classic coastal cottages and charming homes that showcase Sullivan’s Island’s laid-back yet elegant vibe. The salty air and shade from the island’s iconic live oaks make this ride as refreshing as it is beautiful.

As you loop through the island, you’ll encounter Fort Moultrie, a historic site dating back to the Revolutionary War. Pause here to explore the grounds and learn about the fort’s role in defending Charleston Harbor over centuries. The views of the harbor and the distant Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge are worth the stop.

Continue your ride along Middle Street, where you’ll find local restaurants and cafes perfect for a mid-ride snack or a post-ride treat. Stop by Poe’s Tavern for a hearty burger or grab a coffee to fuel the next leg of your adventure.

For the final stretch, head toward the beachfront access points. While cycling isn’t allowed directly on the sandy shores, you can pause to take in sweeping ocean views or park your bike for a walk along the pristine beach. The gentle waves, soft breeze, and panoramic horizon provide the perfect ending to your island ride.

The Sullivan’s Island Loop is more than just a bike ride—it’s an immersive experience that captures the beauty, history, and charm of Charleston’s coastal treasures.

Make sure you take a BioBreak before you park, especially if Aunt Flow is visiting. 😵‍💫 We parked on Poe Avenue then walked over to the trailhead. There are so many different routes you can take... Like a Choose Your Own Adventure book. Watch out for the spiders that are hanging about along the sides of the trails. If you stop to catch your breath, make sure you aren't standing on an ant colony. So many friends to hang out with on your adventure. Pollinators gonna pollinate. 🐜🕷️🦟🦗🦋 If you participate in geocaching, there is a cache to find on your adventure as well... so bring a bauble or trinket to leave behind. 🫶🏼

Bring bug spray!!! Beautiful trail that leads you straight to the beach! We stuck to the main trail and didn't get to explore the side trails too much because they were a bit overgrown. I think it could use a bit of a refresher to define the pathways a little better. Other than that, it was nice and easy!

Not much to the trail from #16 entrance. You have to park before the grassy field on a side street, short walk but we had to ask a kind local. However before the entrance was a row of flowers and about a hundred monarch butterflies that live there year round. That was nice to see.

Beautiful ocean coast to walk for what seems like miles. Parking is a little challenging and we had to use Google maps to find a trail from the street parking to the trail/coast itself. It was well worth it.

This trail is not that big in distance, but it leads to the beach. Which was a total treat. If you follow the GPS for directions, it's going to bring you to a road you can't park on. However you can park on the main street.
