Mountain Biking at Rocky Knob Park

Some trails demand respect from the moment your tires hit the dirt, and Rocky Knob Park is unapologetically one of them. Perched in Boone, NC, this 185-acre mountain bike park is a playground for riders who crave technical singletrack, adrenaline-pumping descents, and a serious dose of Appalachian grit. There’s no easing into this ride—Rocky Knob is for intermediate to advanced riders ready to tackle its rowdy, rugged trails.

From the trailhead, the park feels alive with energy. The hum of bikes mixes with the laughter of families enjoying the adventure playground or a picnic under the shelter. But for those heading up the trails, it’s all business. The climb begins with sharp switchbacks that immediately test your stamina and technical skill. Rhododendron branches arch overhead, creating tunnels of shade, but don’t let the scenery distract you—the rocks demand full attention.

The climb is a relentless workout, with roots, boulders, and off-camber sections keeping you on your toes. It’s gritty, challenging, and unapologetically rocky—exactly what seasoned riders live for. As you grind higher, the forest opens to glimpses of the Blue Ridge, a fleeting reward for your effort.

And then, the descent begins. All that grit and grind pays off with flowing singletrack, berms that cradle your speed, and the kind of downhill adrenaline that leaves you grinning ear to ear. If you’re feeling bold, tackle PBJ, the advanced skills downhill jump trail. Built for speed and air, PBJ lets you send it with confidence—or discover what you still need to work on.

Between runs, the park’s skills areas offer the perfect space to hone your technical chops. With zones ranging from beginner-friendly features to advanced stunts, there’s always something to practice and perfect. Rocky Knob doesn’t just test you—it helps you grow as a rider.

Great park with access for mountain bikes or hiking. Many different trails and combinations keep it new every time. Nice and peaceful. Has a small playground and covered tables as well.

UPDATE pump track is closed and no where on any site does it say that. Drove a hour for nothing. Bathrooms closed and they are supposed to be open. Do not recommend. Who ever is running this place should be let go. Super fun pump track!! Comes highly recommended. I had a blast. Definitely going back real soon!

First time here but definitely not the last! The terrain is great for all experience levels. I spend 4hours here and only scratched the surface of all that this beautiful park has to offer. Top to bottom runs are highly recommended, but the only way down from the top are pretty difficult so be aware 🤘

Chipmunks! Lots of them!!! The climb to the summit was pretty mild, and with ample undulations to break any monotony. I spent my earned DH dollars on flow: Jumbo Shrimp and PBJ. JS looks like a real hoot at full speed, and was plenty fun at less. It has a couple alternate lines of different difficulty for good measure. PBJ is everything I anticipated from the multiple videos I've seen on it. -------------- OG review>>> I love this place! It's comprised of a network of mostly not long trails. They label them from green to double black. I tried all levels through single black on an old 26er with a whopping 100mm of travel front and back. I had little trouble with almost all of it. The park has some serious rock gardens, rollers abound, and there aren't many steep climbing sections. Then there's PBJ. That's a professionally built short downhill skills trail. It's beautiful! Also check out the well mapped skills areas to enhance your riding experience. There's also a small and fun pump track at the entrance. I had a ton of fun on a fairly casual ride intended to scope this place out. Take the family and go have some fun exercise!

Fantastic riding. Mix of cross country if you like the climbs or downhill jump track for those who want more excitement. There is a small beginner jump area and a progressive drop training area. The climb to the to the trails is similar to berm park but worth it. Professional built blacktop pump track at the parking lot for those who favor a bmx or dirt jumper
