Adventure Guide to Mountain Biking at Nisene Marks and Soquel Demo Forest

Key Facts:

  • Location: Santa Cruz County, near Aptos and Soquel.
  • Terrain: A mix of fire roads and technical singletrack through redwood groves and riparian ecosystems.
  • Skill Level: Intermediate to advanced due to steep climbs and technical downhill sections.
  • Hours: Day-use only, dawn to dusk.
  • Amenities: No restrooms or water sources—bring your own supplies.

Trail Highlights:

  1. Climbing into the Forest:

    • Begin your ride by either climbing Highland Way (a paved road with a steady incline) or crossing the bridge into the fire road. Both routes lead to the main trail network.
    • The climb is shaded by towering redwoods and features occasional views of the surrounding valleys. Expect sustained uphill efforts on fire roads with some singletrack detours to break up the ascent.
  2. Singletrack Ascent Options:

    • At the end of one fire road section, you’ll find a singletrack trail to the right. This offers a more engaging climb through the woods, with moderate grades and a short, steep uphill section.
    • The fire road and singletrack eventually rejoin, leading to more climbing. Continue along Aptos Creek Road, crossing a gate before reaching a clearing and the Ridge Trail junction.
  3. The Ridge Trail Descent:

    • From the Ridge Trail, you have several exhilarating downhill options:
      • Sawpit Trail: A technical, forested descent with tight turns and roots.
      • Tractor Trail: A fast, flowy singletrack with some bumps near the top but smooth enough to hit top speed further down.
      • Braille Trail: A favorite among advanced riders, featuring jumps, drops, and technical challenges.
      • Sulphur Springs Trail: A more mellow option with scenic views and a gentler grade.
    • Each trail descends through dense redwoods, offering a mix of technical features and smooth sections that make the climbs well worth it.
  4. The Return Climb:

    • After finishing a descent, you’ll return to the fire road for a gradual climb back toward the bridge and parking area. Though the climbs are demanding, they’re mostly shaded and well-graded.

Why Ride Here:

The Forest of Nisene Marks and Soquel Demo Forest are known for their mix of challenging ascents and rewarding descents. With well-designed trails that cater to a range of styles—from technical singletrack to high-speed flow—this area is a must-ride for anyone seeking adventure in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Pro Tips for Riders:

  • Supplies: Bring plenty of water, snacks, and tools, as there are no amenities in the forest.
  • Plan Your Descent: Study the trail map at the Ridge Trail clearing to choose your preferred downhill route based on your skill level and goals.
  • Tread Lightly: Practice good trail etiquette by yielding to uphill riders and protecting the ecosystem by staying on marked trails.
  • Time Your Ride: Start early to enjoy cooler temperatures and have ample time for exploring multiple trails.

Whether you’re tackling the technical features of Braille Trail or flying down Tractor Trail, the Forest of Nisene Marks and Soquel Demo Forest deliver a mountain biking experience like no other. The climbs may test your endurance, but the exhilarating descents make every pedal stroke worthwhile.

An incredible place for mountain biking. Wouldn't recommend for hiking. There is a lot of uphill climbing to reach the ridge for the downhill flow trails, but the climb is totally worth it. Expect to spend 2+ hours for a single loop and bike 8+ miles. Definitely a place to go ride if visiting the Santa Cruz area to mountain bike.

Great mushroom Hunting and foraging experience! We took a guided tour for the mushroom hunting and had a great time here. The terrain is very uneven so be careful if you step outside off the trails and into the forest. Remember the directions towards the trail, offline maps and a compass app is a must. once you are inside the forest, all directions look the same. Remember to pack a rainproof jacket and some water and survival supplies just in case. Although the experience was fun, the guided tours can get expensive so I'm not sure if we'd do a guided tour again. These are public lands (passing one private property in between) so you can forage with hobbyists and other enthusiasts. Always triple check a mushroom before consuming.
