Adventure Guide to the Honeybee Canyon / Rail X Ranch Loop

Key Facts:

  • Location: Oro Valley, Arizona
  • Trail Type: Singletrack and doubletrack loop
  • Difficulty: Intermediate
  • Length: ~16–18 miles (depending on route)
  • Highlights: Sonoran Desert scenery, historic windmill, varied trail options

Trail Overview:

  • Start: From the Honeybee Canyon trailhead, take the powerline road north for 0.7 miles to reach a cattle gate. Beyond the gate, look for the singletrack entrance 100 yards ahead on the right.
  • After 1 mile, cross the powerline road and continue. For the Rail X Loop, take the singletrack splitting north about 0.7 miles after crossing the powerline road.
  • Ride north for nearly 2 miles to Edwin Road. Take Edwin Road west; you can follow it 2.5 miles to the windmill or turn off after 1.5 miles for a singletrack detour.

Options at the Windmill:

  1. Follow the main trail for a mix of singletrack and doubletrack.
  2. Take the left fork for more challenging, less-marked singletrack that eventually rejoins the main trail.

After 2 miles, the trail intersects with a doubletrack. Stay left, then take another left at the fork to return to the Honeybee Canyon loop. At the four-way junction, turn right onto the singletrack. This will lead back to the powerline road.

Pro Tips:

  • Start early during warmer months to beat the desert heat.
  • Bring plenty of water and snacks; shade is sparse.
  • The left singletrack near the windmill is harder to follow but offers a more engaging ride. Use a GPS device to stay on track.
  • Look out for desert wildlife, including javelinas, jackrabbits, and hawks.

The Honeybee Canyon / Rail X Ranch Loop is a quintessential Arizona ride, combining flowy trails with captivating views. Whether you're there for speed, scenery, or solitude, this trail network delivers a rewarding experience every time.

Depending on which direction you arrive from you may have to make a u-turn to get to the parking lot. There is a paved path to get you down to the main trail on the right, or if you want a little more rugged start (not really too rugged) that’s on the left. You’ll pass several verandas on your way to the dam and the canyon beyond. I only walked a short distance once past the canyon walls but really enjoyed the Beauty and Tranquility and even saw a honey bee hive. This is a great way to spend a hour or two and have plenty of time left to explore other fun areas in Tucson. So let’s go and have some fun!

Lovely desert oasis tucked away in the Catalina Foothills. It has paved parking, modern facilities, ramadas with picnic tables, and several miles of hiking trails with good views of the desert and the Santa Catalina mountains.
