The fishing here is legendary! In the winter they regularly have ice fishing contest. There’s also a lot of history behind this lake during the gold rush pioneers used to use the lake as a stopping point on the Mormon immigrant trailer. Today I Caples lake is used for water storage and is owned by the El Dorado irrigation district.

This is a beautiful medium size Lake. It is located on Highway 88 between Lake Tahoe and Kirkwood. Great for fishing, hiking or water sports. The atmosphere is pretty. Like a little paradise on the Highway 88. I love to take photos here.

We stopped while visiting the Lake Tahoe. California Highway 88 is a picturesque route that takes you through breathtaking high-elevation lakes and the stunning Sierra Nevada Mountain range. In winter, it completely freezes over. Snow on top can make it a blinding white. In summer, the water is clear and dark blue. There is a resort on the north shore. There is also a campground across the road from the north shore. You can rent kayaks and canoes. The Emigrant Lake Trail runs along the south shore. One of it's tributaries, Emigrant Creek, can be accessed from that trail. The other, Woods Creek, can be accessed via a trail by the same name that leaves from the Woods Creek Trailhead, off the south side of Hwy 88, just east of the lake itself. In spite of all that, I have never seen this lake be anything close to busy. During this visit, I was fortunate to catch the lake at sunset. I've never seen it as calm as this day. Enjoy. Caples Lake is absolutely beautiful! It is right on the edge of Hwy 88 so it hardly gives you a secluded feeling. Kayaking in the summer is fun but fishing from our experience and talking to other fisherman, is pretty average at best. Because of being on the 88, it has a lot of fishing pressure.
