Located along the scenic Tennessee River, the park's expansive reservoir, Wheeler Lake, offers abundant fishing opportunities year-round. Adventure Guide to Fishing at Joe Wheeler State Park

1. Bank Fishing Along the Lodge Area

The shoreline near Joe Wheeler Lodge is an excellent spot for bank fishing. The area features convenient access, picnic tables, and scenic views of Wheeler Lake. Anglers often catch largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish here, especially early in the morning or just before sunset. For best results, use live bait such as worms or minnows, or artificial crankbaits for bass.

2. First Creek Boat Ramp and Cove Fishing

First Creek is a hotspot for crappie and bass, attracting anglers year-round. Located near the park’s campground, this area is accessible by boat or kayak. The cove’s calm waters make it ideal for those targeting crappie using jigs or minnows. During spring and fall, bass fishing improves significantly, with spinnerbaits and topwater lures yielding great results.

3. Wheeler Dam Tailwaters for Trophy Catfish

Below Wheeler Dam, the tailwater section of the Tennessee River holds some of the biggest catfish in the region. Anglers looking for trophy blue and flathead catfish regularly fish here using cut bait, live shad, or chicken liver. Strong currents create a challenge, so fishing from a boat or the dam’s designated areas provides the best experience.

Came here for a morning trail run starting across from the First Creek ramp on a trail off the gravel parking lot after finding the place on AllTrails. Ran along the Samuel Harden Sr loop, across the ramp parking lot, down the Jimmy Sims Trail and to the "Awesome Trail", which is a combination of the Paige Farm Trail, The Punisher, and Luther's Pass. Did two loops of that then ran back, 17 miles all told. It was a great run with good terrain and enough elevation gain to make it challenging but not impossible. There was plenty of tree cover that prevented me, an easy burner, from getting sunburn. Trails were well-maintained and well-marked, easy to follow. Several bathrooms along the whole route, which came in handy. Great scenery too. Will likely come back here for another long run once the chafing goes away (I forgot my chafing wipes).

A sites restrooms and showers were terrible. No soap or toilet paper, neither. B sites seems better. Some B sites have a nice view of the lake. Sites have water, electric, and sewer. A lodge with a restaurant is a mile or so away.
