Fishing at Opal Beach

Opal Beach, located within the Gulf Islands National Seashore near Navarre Beach, is a prime fishing destination known for its pristine shoreline and abundant fish species. This protected area provides anglers with a serene setting, clear waters, and excellent fishing opportunities from both the shore and small watercraft. The combination of accessible fishing spots and the natural beauty of the Gulf makes Opal Beach a favorite location for both locals and visitors looking for a rewarding day on the water.

Adventure Guide to Fishing at Opal Beach

1. Shore Fishing Along the Gulf

  • Opal Beach’s sugar-white sand and crystal-clear waters make it an ideal location for surf fishing.
  • Common catches include pompano, redfish, speckled trout, and whiting during different seasons.
  • Anglers use shrimp, sand fleas, and artificial lures to attract fish, and a medium to heavy surf rod is recommended for casting into the waves.
  • Fishing is best during early morning and late afternoon, especially on incoming tides when fish move closer to the shore to feed.

2. Fishing Near the Jetties and Sandbars

  • The submerged sandbars and occasional rock formations near Opal Beach attract schools of Spanish mackerel, bluefish, and flounder.
  • Wading out to the sandbars allows for better casting distance, but anglers should be cautious of rip currents.
  • Using topwater plugs, spoons, and live bait increases the chances of catching larger game fish.

3. Kayak Fishing in the Bay Side Waters

  • While Opal Beach faces the open Gulf, the nearby Santa Rosa Sound provides a calmer setting for kayak fishing.
  • Ideal for catching redfish, trout, and sheepshead, these waters are accessible from various kayak launch points near Navarre Beach.
  • A lightweight inshore fishing rod with live or artificial bait works best for targeting fish in the shallows.

Local Insights

  • Fishing regulations require an Florida Saltwater Fishing License, which can be purchased online or at local tackle shops.
  • Catch-and-release practices help preserve the fish population, particularly during spawning seasons.

Visitor Tips

  • Best Times: Spring and fall months yield the most productive fishing conditions.
  • Essential Gear: Fishing rods, bait, sunscreen, water-resistant clothing, and a cooler for storage.
  • Directions: Opal Beach is about 6 miles east of Navarre Beach, accessible via Highway 399. The drive takes approximately 10 minutes.

Absolutely gorgeous! Love seeing nature instead of tall buildings and beach houses. Beaches are cleaner and so much less crowded. However, I wish more beaches would do showers that are closed off so people can completely wash off and change into dry clothes. It’s no fun driving to your next destination with sand in your cracks and crevices! 😂

This is a beautiful beach front that has restrooms, plenty of the parking, and crystal clear water and white sand. We even noticed that there were translucent fish that would swim all the way up to the water’s edge. There is a fee to enter, however, this is waived for military. It was also a 25 mile speed limit bit of a drive to get here but worth it for less to no crowds and a peaceful experience! My daughter throughly enjoyed herself and we found some unique sea shells.

Best beach in the world??? Such great color of water, clarity, white sand, what else could you ask for? It is inside a national park, so unless you have a pass, you have to pay to get in
