Casting into the Wild: Fishing the Waters of Bulls Bay

Bulls Bay, just north of Charleston, is a fishing haven where the pristine waters of the Atlantic meet the untouched beauty of the Lowcountry. With its expansive salt marshes, tidal creeks, and abundant marine life, this area offers anglers an unparalleled chance to reel in a big catch while immersing themselves in nature’s quiet grandeur.

Known for its rich biodiversity, Bulls Bay is a hotspot for inshore fishing. Red drum (redfish), spotted seatrout, flounder, and sheepshead are just a few of the species that frequent its fertile waters. Depending on the season, anglers may also encounter black drum and tarpon. With its shallow flats and grassy marshes, the bay is particularly well-suited for sight-casting, a thrilling technique that lets you target fish visually before casting your line.

For those who prefer deeper waters, the nearby reefs and channels are teeming with king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, and cobia. These offshore opportunities make Bulls Bay a versatile fishing destination, accommodating everyone from casual anglers to seasoned pros.

Kayak fishing is another popular option here, offering a stealthy and immersive way to navigate the narrow creeks and marshes. Gliding silently through the water, you can access hidden spots where the fish are plentiful and the scenery is unmatched.

The bay’s unspoiled environment also makes it a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts. As you cast your line, watch for ospreys diving for fish, dolphins cruising the channels, or even the occasional sea turtle popping up for air. The tranquility of the bay, far from the hustle of urban life, adds an almost meditative quality to the fishing experience.

Whether you’re chasing the thrill of the fight or simply enjoying the serenity of the Lowcountry, fishing Bulls Bay is an unforgettable way to connect with Charleston’s natural wonders.

This experience exceeded high expectations! I was fortunate enough to finally get the invite to play here this past week from the time you enter the gate until the walk up number 18, this is just special! The hospitality, tremendous staff and food, the exceptional grounds keeping, the course was immaculate! You stand at top the highest place in the low country at the clubhouse and all its grandeur that can be seen from a 360° view of the golf course. It really is a center point and genius of Mike Stranz. I had the most remarkable time. thanks to all the staff and friends that made this experience incredible. Hopefully one day I'll have the opportunity to relive it.

Just had the opportunity to play Bulls Bay today. Once in a lifetime experience. The tournament we were in showcased how well the facility is maintained and run. Loved every minute with the time spent with family and friends playing the best sport ever created. Thank you Bulls Bay-for a walk well spent.

Phenomenal establishment all around. From the moment we pulled up to the bag drop and throughout our round it was a great experience. The course is fun and has unique qualities you have to see for yourself. Definitely not your average layout. I have been fortunate to have played its sister course Royal New Kent in Virginia. Once I heard they were related I knew it was going to be a challenge. The staff is outstanding and, really make you feel welcome as a guest. I can see why their membership wait list is so long. I really hope we get another chance to play out there in the future.

Most favorite golf course I have ever played. I love it more than Pebble Beach Pinehurst #2 and Ocean Course
