Fishing Lake Taneycomo in Branson, Missouri

Lake Taneycomo in Branson, Missouri, is a must-visit destination for fishing enthusiasts. Known for its cold, clear waters, it serves as one of the premier trout-fishing locations in the country. Created in 1913 when the White River was dammed, this 22-mile-long lake combines the charm of a river with reservoir fishing conditions. Its consistent flow from Table Rock Dam creates ideal environments for species such as rainbow and brown trout, making it a central part of Branson's outdoor legacy.

Adventure Guide to Fishing Lake Taneycomo

  • Trophy Area Below Table Rock Dam
Located near Branson's Table Rock Dam, this area offers world-class trout fishing. The upstream waters are exceptionally cold, a result of water released from beneath Table Rock Lake. Anglers here frequently catch trophy-sized trout exceeding 20 inches. Artificial lures like jigs and spoons fare well, as live bait restrictions are in place to preserve the population.

  • Cooper Creek Public Fishing Docks
Just a few miles from downtown Branson, Cooper Creek offers family-friendly fishing docks. This spot is perfect for beginners or those without boats. It's well-maintained, offering easily accessible platforms and the potential to reel in species such as trout, panfish, or bass.

  • Lake Taneycomo by Boat
Renting a fishing boat enhances the experience, particularly downstream of Branson Landing. You'll find scenic locations and hot spots rich in fish. Many marinas, like Lilleys' Landing Resort and Marina, rent well-equipped boats. Guided fishing tours are also available if you'd like expert advice or a more tailored fishing trip.

Local Insights

Lake Taneycomo is regularly stocked with hundreds of thousands of trout by the Missouri Department of Conservation, making it a top year-round fishing destination. In 2015, a record-setting 40-pound brown trout was caught here, solidifying its legendary reputation. The water can feel more like a mountain stream, especially near the dam, so dress appropriately.

Visitor Tips

  • Best Time to Visit: Late spring through early fall offers great conditions, but winter fishing can also be exceptional due to consistent trout activity.
  • What to Bring: A valid Missouri fishing permit, waders for shore anglers, polarized sunglasses, sunscreen, and plenty of water.
  • Driving Directions: Lake Taneycomo is a 15-minute drive southeast from the Ozark Mountains' heart, depending on your location in Branson.

Unique Great fishing Better recreation Beautiful This lake is amazing. It’s the temperature of grandmas heart…45 degrees. Granny just dumped Rick, her latest fling. Poor guy was the whole reason for the trip. I guess Taneycomo will have to be our medicine and it’ll work I’m sure! What a beautiful and very fun lake. The fishing is awesome, views are second to none and its nice and chilly year round. I’d love to live here alone without grandma and all her drama but I dont get to pick grandmas like I get to pick where I’ll spend my summers. Summers in Branson and I guess I’ll keep ol granny.
