Hiking the Escarpment Trail at Lake of the Clouds Overlook

Nestled in Michigan’s Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, the Escarpment Trail offers arguably the most breathtaking hiking experience in the region. Known for its dramatic vistas and unspoiled beauty, this trail takes hikers along a ridgeline overlooking the famous Lake of the Clouds, surrounded by dense hardwood forests and rugged terrain. Its sweeping views and moderately challenging path make it a must-do for both avid hikers and nature enthusiasts seeking an unforgettable adventure.

Adventure Guide To Hiking the Escarpment Trail

  • Lake of the Clouds Scenic Overlook
The hike begins at the popular Lake of the Clouds Overlook parking lot, where visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the cobalt-blue lake before stepping onto the trail. This entry point is ideal for first-timers, as it provides immediate access to the well-marked path. What makes this spot so special is the sheer contrast between the deep blue waters of the lake and the surrounding greenery during summer, or vibrant autumn hues in the fall.

  • Ridgeline Vantage Points
Throughout the 4.3-mile trail, hikers are treated to various lookouts perched high above the surrounding wilderness. Notable spots along the ridge provide unobstructed sights of Lake Superior to the north, the Presque Isle River winding below, and endless forest beyond. Some landmarks, such as the aptly nicknamed "Cloud Window," offer perfect photo opportunities and a serene spot to pause and take it all in.

  • Big Carp River Valley
Toward the eastern section of the trail, the path gradually descends, leading hikers closer to the Big Carp River. This section showcases a shift in terrain, with moss-covered rocks, ferns, and exposure to the peaceful flow of the river as it cuts through the landscape.

Local Insights

  • The Ojibwa people considered the Porcupine Mountains a sacred place, and their legends regard Lake of the Clouds as a site of great spiritual significance.
  • Peak autumn foliage generally occurs in late September to mid-October, drawing large crowds for its vibrant display.

Visitor Tips

  • Best time to visit: Early morning or late afternoon for cooler temperatures and fewer visitors.
  • Bring sturdy shoes, bug spray, and water, as the trail includes uneven surfaces and steep inclines.
  • From nearby Ontonagon, Michigan, the parking lot is approximately a 30-minute drive via M-64 E and the South Boundary Road.

Beautiful overlook with large parking lot. Free. Easy short walk to the view and trailhead. We went in late October and it was not crowded. The drive in was gorgeous. Couldn’t find the visitors center.

Nice little hike to get to the lookout area. Beautiful views for miles. Even if you can't hike for distance, it is an easy hike from parking. Several trails to hike in different directions for the better hiker. I could easily spend a day and not hit all the trails. Gives me a reason to come back for more

We went during the labor day long weekend. It is still lots of green, maybe in a couple of weeks the fall colors might appear. It is not very crowded. We enjoyed a lot, the small hike and the view from the summit is amazing.

Stunning views but I imagine fall is the best time to visit. I don't think it would have been as impressive without the fall colours. We started the hike too but it was a bit much for us so we turned back. What we saw of the hike was pretty though.

I've been visiting Lake of the Clouds since I was two years old. We would drive up and visit the lookout then have a picnic lunch. It seems as you get older, you stay longer, breathing the fresh air. If you have time, try Presque Isle Falls. In the winter, the ski hill has the best views over looking lake Superior.
