Horseback Riding in Yellowstone’s Backcountry

Exploring Yellowstone on horseback feels like stepping into a living history book. The clip-clop of hooves on dirt trails echoes the journeys of pioneers, rangers, and Native peoples who navigated this land long before cars roared through its roads. On horseback, the wilderness unfolds at a pace that matches its timeless beauty.

From the moment you mount your sure-footed companion, the rhythm of the ride begins. Meadows stretch out before you like natural cathedrals, wildflowers nodding in the breeze. The forest envelops you, its earthy scent mingling with the creak of leather saddles and the occasional snort of your horse. Streams babble softly as you cross their cool, shallow waters, and the ever-present backdrop of distant peaks reminds you that you’re deep in Yellowstone’s heart.

Rides vary from short, family-friendly jaunts to multi-day treks that dive deep into the backcountry. Along the way, you might spot a herd of bison grazing peacefully or catch a fleeting glimpse of an elk disappearing into the trees. The silence of the trail, punctuated only by the sounds of nature, creates a meditative rhythm that’s impossible to replicate on foot or by car.

Guided by experienced wranglers, you’ll learn not only about Yellowstone’s landscapes but also the bond between rider and horse. These animals are more than transportation—they’re partners, their steady gait a reminder of the park’s untamed soul.

By the time you dismount, the world feels slower, quieter, and more grounded. Horseback riding in Yellowstone isn’t just a way to see the park—it’s a way to feel it, in every creak of the saddle and every turn of the trail.

Myself and my husband booked trail riding during our vacation in August and had a fantastic time with the Diamond P Ranch, our horses Tiny and Red Deer and Sidney, our guide. Booking was simple, we felt well taken care of and were impressed with how friendly everyone at the ranch was, how knowledgeable Sidney was of the history of the ranch, the area and the horses and would recommend Diamond P if you're looking for a beautiful trail ride in a breathtaking setting. The experience will stay with us and hopefully we can make it back from Scotland some day!

Our guides were patient, friendly, and had things under control the entire time. Our only concern was that for the 60-minute ride that we did (and with mainly inexperienced young riders), the trail seemed a bit advanced. They took us up a couple of pretty steep hills- thankfully, the horses (and the young riders) navigated it well. *Phew!* All in all, it was a good ride and a memorable experience.

This is a MUST. The guided trail horse ride was beyond amazing. We paid for the private guided 4 hour ride with lunch and it was the best! The lunch from Ernie’s was delicious and hearty. Our guide Albert was awesome, very knowledgeable and gave us the best history lessons! The horses were perfect even for those a bit afraid. I would go again & again!

This was the perfect experience! From the trail we took to the staff to the health and wellness of the horses, Diamond P Ranch did not in anyway disappoint. Our trail guide Alex was really welcoming and knowledgeable. Our group really loved hearing about how well the horses are treated and the amazing life the owners provide to all that are working and retired. Amazing place. Would recommend!

What a spectacular ranch! My husband and I went for the 3 hr morning ride, and loved every moment. Our guide Kim was very knowledgeable and was happy to assist us with anything we needed and had great control of the group and horses. I wonderful way to see the forest. The ranch was well kept and horses were beautiful. We had a mix up with our booking (on my end) and The owner Willie and staff member Darcey helped us out no problem at all they were very kind and helpful. I could have spent all day there soaking up the atmosphere. Thank you for such a memorable experience
