Introductory Overview:
Located just 30 minutes from Santa Cruz, Elkhorn Slough is one of California's largest tidal wetlands and an ecological treasure. Known for its tranquil waters and vibrant biodiversity, kayaking in Elkhorn Slough offers an unmatched opportunity to observe nature up close. It's especially notable for being home to one of the largest populations of southern sea otters, along with a colorful array of birds, harbor seals, and other marine life. This activity provides a peaceful yet thrilling way to experience and appreciate the Central Coast's unique environment while contributing to ecotourism efforts that help preserve this precious ecosystem.
Adventure Guide to Kayaking Elkhorn Slough
Moss Landing Harbor Launch Site: Start your kayaking journey at Moss Landing Harbor. This popular access point features calm water access and ample parking. The harbor itself is a hotspot for wildlife; you can often see sea otters playing and feeding near the docks even before heading into the main slough. Several kayak rental shops, including Kayak Connection, offer single and tandem kayaks along with safety instructions for first-timers.
North Marsh Loop: Paddle through the North Marsh Loop for unparalleled birdwatching. This area is considered ideal for spotting species like great blue herons, snowy egrets, and brown pelicans. The relatively protected waters of the loop make this an easy, beginner-friendly route that still offers rich scenery and wildlife.
Seal Bend: For those seeking a more immersive experience, paddle further into the slough toward Seal Bend. Named for its frequent harbor seal inhabitants, this area is great for observing marine mammals in a quiet, relaxed environment. Be mindful of keeping a respectful distance to avoid disturbing the animals.

A quaint place and definitely hidden gem. Walking trails are fairly easy and the views are great! Staff was friendly and the park is fairly clean. Lots of wildlife and not a lot of people (just the way we like it 😊)

What an incredibly wonderful secret, hidden in plain sight. I’ve loved four miles away from the Elkhorn Slough Reserve for over fifty years and have never stepped foot inside. Why did I wait? Why did I waste so many precious years not enjoying the beauty and serenity? I’ll never know. But I am so glad that today, I decided to take my three year old toddler out for a walk to burn some energy. Burn some, we did.
If you’re just into fresh air and exercise, you’ll love it. If you’re I to bird watching or nature photography, you’ll love it. If you want to learn about the Slough’s ecosystem and animals, you’ll love it. If you’re allergic to beauty and awe, you’ll hate it.
Sincerely, I’m not even sure I want to post this review because I’d love for this absolutely 100% free hidden jewel remains so. But God didn’t make beauty like this for just a handful of people to enjoy.
There are picnic areas and even restrooms along the trails. So there’s no excuse not to make your day better and visit Elkhorn Slough Reserve.
