Paddling Through Enchantment: Kayaking the Blackwater Swamps of Cypress Gardens

Kayaking the blackwater swamps of Cypress Gardens is an otherworldly experience that takes you deep into Charleston’s natural beauty and storied history. With its mirror-like waters reflecting ancient cypress trees and their dramatic, moss-draped branches, this hidden gem offers a paddler’s paradise steeped in tranquility and wonder.

Located just 30 minutes from downtown Charleston, Cypress Gardens invites you to embark on a self-guided kayaking journey through its 80-acre swamp. As you glide silently through the water, the dark, tannin-stained surface creates an illusion of paddling on liquid glass. The stillness is broken only by the occasional call of a barred owl or the soft splash of a turtle slipping into the water.

The labyrinth of trails winds through groves of towering cypress and tupelo trees, their knobby knees rising eerily from the water’s surface. Keep your eyes peeled for the vibrant flashes of wood ducks and the graceful flight of herons and egrets. In warmer months, you might spot an alligator sunning itself on a submerged log—a thrilling reminder of the wildness of this ecosystem.

One of the most captivating aspects of kayaking here is the sense of timelessness. Paddle under arched wooden bridges and past picturesque ruins that hint at the area’s past as a 1920s rice plantation. For movie buffs, the swamp’s ethereal beauty might feel familiar—scenes from The Notebook and Cold Mountain were filmed in these very waters.

Whether you’re seeking solitude, a romantic outing, or a family-friendly adventure, Cypress Gardens offers an unforgettable escape. The serenity of the swamp and its hauntingly beautiful scenery make kayaking here more than an activity—it’s a journey into Charleston’s untamed heart.

What a wonderful hidden gem in Berkeley County! We were so excited to get the annual pass and have been almost every weekend for the past two months. There are great walking trails, a “swamparium”, and butterfly house to enjoy with friends and family. The boat ride is gorgeous as well! I appreciated the scheduling system for it as you can check your place in queue for the boat ride and the employees are super helpful with getting you on and off the boat. We plan on continuing to make good use of our pass!

A beautiful affordable attraction. The staff were friendly and informative. All the exhibits had something interesting to offer. Kyle, our boat guide was excellent, lots of info, answered our questions and has a sense of humour. I’d love to go again in the spring when everything is in bloom.

Cypress Gardens is a must do tour of a black fresh water swamp. What is amazing about the Cypress Gardens swamp is it doesn't smell bad and there were no bugs. Was the most enjoyable swamp tour you could ask for. The staff was so friendly and informative. Gate opens at 9:00 a.m. and the first guided swamp boat tour leaves at 10:00 a.m. sharp. Then every hour on the hour. Gate admission is $10 per adult and the guided boat tour is an additional $5 per adult. You. An do a self-guided boat tour for free, but you would not get the history like you do the the guided tour. The boat tour lasts approximately 45 minutes to an hour. We seen two wild alligators in the swamp while on the tour as well as a couple zoo kept gators. There is a building with snakes, turtles and reptiles. And a butterfly house and bird exhibit. Walking trails and much more. The do Halloween night swamp tours which sounded super cool. Check them out when in the Charleston, SC. area.

This place is really cool! The self guided swamp tours are a ton of fun. We saw birds, lots of turtles, gators, fish, and lots of creepy crawlies doing their swamp thing. Lots of movie history from Swamp Thing to The Notebook. Outstanding family spot. They do weddings in a number of locations throughout the park. When you go, take the time to walk the trails and take your time. There is so much wildlife to check out. I'm looking good forward to going back again.
