Paddling the Upper New River: A Serene Adventure Through the New River Gorge

The Upper New River meanders gently through the New River Gorge, offering paddlers a tranquil journey amidst West Virginia's breathtaking landscapes. This section is ideal for families and beginners, providing a harmonious blend of mild rapids and calm pools, all set against the backdrop of the gorge's verdant beauty.

Paddling Experience

Spanning approximately 8 to 11 miles, the Upper New River features Class I to III rapids, making it accessible for novices while still engaging for seasoned paddlers. The gentle flow allows for leisurely exploration, with ample opportunities to observe local wildlife and remnants of historic coal mining operations along the banks. Notable rapids such as McCreery Rapids add a splash of excitement to the journey, while calm pools invite paddlers to relax or take a refreshing swim.

Seasonal Considerations

The paddling season typically extends from April through October, with each season offering unique experiences. Spring brings higher water levels and cooler temperatures, while summer and early fall provide warmer waters and lush, green scenery. Checking current water conditions and weather forecasts before embarking is always recommended.

Guided Paddling Opportunities

For those seeking a structured experience, local outfitters offer guided trips tailored to various skill levels. These trips are perfect for families, with many outfitters allowing children as young as six to participate. Guided excursions often include expert instruction, safety gear, and insights into the river’s natural and historical features.

Important Considerations

  • Safety: Always wear a personal flotation device and helmet. Be prepared for self-rescue in the event of an unexpected swim.
  • Permits and Regulations: Adhere to National Park Service guidelines and confirm any necessary permits for your trip.
  • What to Bring: Sunscreen, water, snacks, and a dry bag for essentials.

Scenic Highlights

Beyond the gentle rapids, the Upper New River offers stunning vistas of towering sandstone cliffs and verdant forests. The serene waters and calm pools create perfect opportunities for wildlife spotting, photography, and moments of quiet reflection. The area’s rich history, with visible remnants of its coal mining heritage, adds depth to the journey.

Was pretty awesome. I didn't give it 5 because I couldn't spend much time here, so that's on me not the Visitors Center. Staf was friendly and helpful. Two good viewing points/overlooks. Wish I had more time looks like a great place to stay and visit

Interesting story about the gorge and the bridge. Park Ranger at Visitor center encouraged us to take the old road under the bridge which was very cool. Wife got all the pics of the bridge and mine are from Sandstone Falls on the New River, about an hour from the bridge. The river was swollen from remnants of hurricane Helene and the folks along the river were thankful the dam held upstream or this area would have been underwater!

New River Gorge is an amazing national park. We drove here from Ohio. The good scenery on the way made my hours driving less boring. Once getting in the park area, we started driving along the river. Some fall spots were also near the way. I was feeling the sky was open when driving onto the bridge. This national park is friendly for drivers. This national park is huge built along the river. It takes almost 1 hours driving from one visitor center to one attraction spot on the other side. Anyway, there are many attractions and interesting activities such as rafting and bridge walking. The large bridge is the symbol of this park. We only had one day time, so we only did several short hikes and enjoyed the gorge view. Definitely we will try its famous rafting adventure next time.
