Black's Beach, located just north of La Jolla in San Diego, is renowned for being one of the premier surfing destinations in Southern California. Known for its powerful waves and unique beach access, this spot is adored by experienced surfers seeking a thrilling challenge. The beach lies beneath scenic cliffs and offers consistent swells, making it a must-visit for those passionate about surfing. Its combination of natural beauty and surf-ready waves represents what makes San Diego’s coast so iconic.
Adventure Guide to Surfing at Black's Beach
Wave Quality and Challenge
Black's Beach is famous for having some of the most powerful and consistent waves in the region due to underwater canyons that amplify the swells. Waves often exceed 10 feet on good days, attracting advanced surfers looking for adrenaline-pumping rides. Be aware: these waves are not beginner-friendly.
Access Through Torrey Pines
Reaching Black's Beach requires a bit of effort. Most visitors utilize the Torrey Pines Gliderport Trail, a steep yet manageable hike down the cliffs. This journey provides breathtaking views of the coastline. The beach itself is secluded, contributing to its unspoiled feel.
Beach Features
Black’s often provides a more private surfing experience compared to more populated San Diego beaches. The vast beach area lets surfers spread out, reducing crowding on the waves. Amenities are minimal, so come prepared with essentials like water and snacks. Be aware that the northern part of the beach is known for its clothing-optional policy.
Local Insights
Black’s Beach takes its name from the Black family, who once owned the land above the cliffs. Today, it is celebrated for its challenging surf breaks and laid-back atmosphere. While surfing conditions shine in fall and winter, the strong rip currents warrant caution. Many locals cherish it as a hidden gem within the city’s bustling coastline.
Visitor Tips
Best Time to Surf: Fall and winter offer the best swells with reduced crowds.
What to Bring: A wetsuit (the water can be cold), surfboard, sunscreen, and sturdy shoes for hiking the trail.
Directions: From San Diego, drive north on Interstate 5, exit at La Jolla Village Drive, head west to the Torrey Pines Gliderport, and descend the trail (20-25 minutes from downtown).

Came here to see the view from the top which can be reached going to the University side. Parking is free here and you can see all the paragliding from a cool view. All the flowers are bloomed this time of year so that was a plus.

I’ve been to this clothing-optional beach twice and each time was sooooo nice. It’s best when the weather is 75-85 degrees and you bring something that provides shade. The hike down is 15-20 minutes and better with closed-toe shoes. Once, I saw air gliders jumping from the cliffs and floating toward the beach, softly, during sunset. A dreamy visual for me.
There are a good number of nudists, skewing male, but the vibes are overall ‘live and let live’—how it should be. 😊

I had a nice trip to the area and visited Black's Beach. The weather was great that day for activities and the view over the ocean was great.
There was plenty of parking and porta potties so the stop was very convenient. I would definitely visit this attraction again and recommend others stop by. Be sure to wear good shoes if you're feeling adventurous.

Such a beautiful view here and a really nice beach overall, the hike to the bottom is not that long and parking isn’t that bad, but besides that it’s still a great hike and beach to go explore to

My favorite “clothing optional beach in California. It’s definitely step, with man made stairs if you go down to the left of the hang glider port. Worth the sweat though, with a beautiful setting, beautiful beaches, water, and views. Plenty of room to layout, play volleyball, or do whatever your heart desires. For those who join please respect the beach, the people, and help keep this beautiful beach clean.
