Ridgeline Trail: The Crown Jewel of DuPont State Forest

DuPont State Forest is renowned for its world-class mountain biking, and the Ridgeline Trail is its shining star. Smooth, fast, and flowy, this 3.5-mile gem offers a perfect blend of thrills and accessibility, making it a favorite for riders of all levels. Whether you’re chasing speed or soaking in the scenery, Ridgeline Trail delivers the kind of ride that reminds you why you fell in love with mountain biking in the first place.

The adventure typically begins at the Lake Imaging trailhead, where a series of connecting trails lead to Ridgeline’s entry point. The climb to the trail is gradual and scenic, winding through lush hardwood forests, past creeks, and up gentle inclines. Once you hit Ridgeline, though, it’s all about the downhill.

Ridgeline’s descent is a masterclass in flow. Bermed turns, rollers, and smooth dirt paths make for a ride that feels like a roller coaster in the woods. The trail’s wide, forgiving design means you can take it at your own pace, whether you’re a beginner getting comfortable on a bike or an experienced rider craving speed and airtime. Along the way, the forest blurs into a green-and-brown canvas, with the occasional break offering views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.

By the time you reach the trail’s end, grinning and probably a little muddy, you’ll understand why Ridgeline is one of the most celebrated trails in the Southeast.

Great Mt. biking and hiking trails. The parking lot does get busy late morning, but DuPont is so big you'll only run into a few people on the trails. Ridgeline is a great downhill! Enjoy!

Central parking area for mountain bikers and horse back riding. About 1 mile away from typical hiking trailhead for high falls and triple falls. Parking lot can get very full early in the day, especially on weekends and holidays. Grievance is about 1/3 of the area is reserved for horse trailers, and I haven’t seen it used very often in the weekends. Parking lot is located at the end of the ridgeline trail. There is 1 outhouse.

I LOVE DuPont - it is perhaps my favorite place to MTB. But NC parks management seems to be sitting on their thumbs where parking is concerned. ‘Improvements’ include a bunch of really ugly don’t park on the road signs and a big welcome to DuPont that let’s us visitors know parking is a problem - like the flashing construction signs. Not sure who the boss is but he/she needs to get an act together.

Great place to park for mountain biking as long as you get there in time to get a spot! We noticed that street parking has been blocked. I can't imagine how it would be during the summer or weekends.
