Explore the Maroon Bells Scenic Loop: A Jewel in Aspen, Colorado

The Maroon Bells Scenic Loop isn’t just a trail—it’s a gentle journey into the heart of one of the most iconic landscapes in the Rockies. Framed by the towering, twin peaks of the Maroon Bells and the shimmering waters of Maroon Lake, this 1.9-mile loop offers an unparalleled blend of accessibility and beauty, making it a must-visit for hikers of all abilities.

The adventure begins at the Maroon Lake Trailhead, where the Bells rise like sentinels over a pristine alpine valley. Known as the most photographed mountains in North America, their striated faces are a masterpiece of nature’s artistry. Early risers are rewarded with the Bells bathed in golden light, their reflection perfectly mirrored in the still waters of Maroon Lake—a scene so breathtaking it feels almost surreal.

The trail itself is a delight. Starting on a well-maintained path, it winds through aspen groves that shimmer in gold during the fall and lush meadows dotted with wildflowers in summer. The gentle elevation gain makes it ideal for families, photographers, and those seeking a leisurely outing.

Highlights along the loop include the crystal-clear creek crossings and the interpretive signs that offer glimpses into the area’s unique geology and ecosystem. Midway, the path opens to a panoramic view of the valley, with the Maroon Bells commanding the skyline and Pyramid Peak standing proudly nearby.

As you complete the loop, take a moment to pause by the lakeshore. The quiet stillness of this place, punctuated only by the soft rustle of wind through the trees or the distant call of a bird, is what makes the Maroon Bells Scenic Loop so special. It’s not just a trail; it’s a place where time slows, and the beauty of the natural world takes center stage.

Amazing. This was an unplanned excursion so we didn't spend as much time as we would have wanted hiking around, but we definitely will plan better next time! The staff at Aspen Highlands (where you get your boarding pass) were great. They have a gift shop, snacks, and drinks for purchase. There's also a coffee shop next door in case you need a caffeine shot before or after your trip. Our shuttle driver, Owen, was so fun. He made the trip up informative and entertaining. The restrooms at the drop off location were clean. The signage and maps are easy to understand and give you mileage and intensity of the hike. We went to Crater Lake and stopped off at the Scenic Loop along the way. Because we didn't plan this, we were wearing jeans, t-shirts, and converse and were able to make it through easily. 5 stars all the way! We'll be back again

It was absolutely beautiful. To visit Maroon Bells, you need a reservation, or if you don’t have one, you can take the shuttle bus. It’s a bit ridiculous that after three questions, you need to pay $5, but the stunning scenery makes it worth it

We didn’t have a reservation, so we took the shuttle to Maroon Bells Lake, which turned out to be super convenient. The views of the mountains as soon as you arrive are absolutely stunning. From there, we hiked to Crater Lake, which was a moderate trail and so worth it. The landscape along the way is beautiful, with aspen trees and mountain views surrounding you. It was a peaceful and rewarding hike, and the whole area felt like a perfect mountain escape. Highly recommend!

Beautiful hike to crater lake. The aspen trees were in partial to full foliage. The hike is moderate to easy. Around 3.8 miles round trip. I took my dog with me, and we had a blast. I would do this again, however Aspen is 3.5 hour drive from Denver. A little far and actually it’s not my favorite town. I prefer other small towns to this one. But the hike was nice and worth the drive.

Just amazing. It's one of the coolest places I've ever seen. It has the most incredible views and wildlife. The vegetation is unlike anywhere and the water is the clearest and most reflective I've ever seen. The trail is very easy to walk around the lake area and I would say you could even push a wheelchair on the beginning part of it. Just had to be careful of the wildlife. Just be prepared if you're going any distance, the weather changed on us very quickly and we were caught in a rain storm. They have shuttles that leave from Aspen Highlands and run there every hour between 8 and 5. Otherwise you can make parking reservations to drive up there but only before 8am or after 5pm https://youtu.be/c2bSV2G8pe0?si=DK3SIyX82qo8Nu2l
