Hiking the Crater Lake Trail in Aspen, Colorado

Tucked beneath the towering majesty of the Maroon Bells, the Crater Lake Trail is not just a hike—it’s a journey into the heart of Colorado’s wilderness. Every step of the 3.6-mile out-and-back trail feels like peeling back a layer of natural wonder, revealing landscapes that could be plucked from a dream.

The adventure begins at the Maroon Lake Trailhead, where the Maroon Bells—two impossibly photogenic peaks—stand as proud sentinels of the valley. The trail wastes no time delivering on its promises, winding through a dense aspen forest that shimmers in golden hues during the fall. As your boots crunch over roots and rocks, the sounds of the world fall away, replaced by the rustling leaves and the faint whisper of mountain breezes.

The climb is moderate but steady, with rocky sections keeping things interesting. Around every bend, a new view emerges: the crystal waters of Maroon Lake reflecting the Bells, alpine meadows teeming with wildflowers in summer, and jagged cliffs rising like ancient fortresses.

When you reach Crater Lake, the reward is breathtaking. Nestled at the base of the Maroon Bells, the lake is a mirror-like expanse that captures the peaks and sky in perfect symmetry. The water’s edge is strewn with boulders, making it an ideal spot to rest, soak in the beauty, and snap photos that will ignite envy among your friends.

The return trip offers a new perspective as the afternoon light casts the valley in a golden glow. By the time you return to the trailhead, your legs may be tired, but your spirit will feel renewed. Crater Lake Trail isn’t just a hike—it’s a love letter to Colorado’s alpine splendor.

It's a 2hr return hike. Easy/ medium grade as it's full of rocks. The lake is almost dried up right now but the views of the mountains are well worth the hike

Crater Lake looks healthy as of 2 June 2024. Hop in and enjoy the frigid numbness after the hike up from Maroon Lake! There is a bit of snow up to the lake, microspikes are currently recommended. The campsites look great- some are partially covered in snow, but there are some dry patches. Be sure to reserve in advance online.

The Crater Lake Trail is marked as a moderately difficult trail with a round-trip distance of 3.5 miles, and the scenery along the way was breathtaking. Compared with my usual trains distance of 5.5-6 miles, it did not seem long, today's walk was unexpectedly difficult. Firstly, the slope is steep, and secondly, the road surface. A considerable part of it is walking through roadless boulders, which is very strenuous. Be careful as you may twist your feet; in addition, within few minutes, I took off my down jacket and coat; the high altitude of Elevation 9580ft made me want to breathe, and the water was consumed quickly. On the road, there were met many young people carrying heavy backpacks, obviously planning to camp for the night; there were also people carrying guns, and I was told that their target was Mountain Goat. This is a quite amazing Lifetime hiking experience, I enjoyed every minute of it and I have the same feeling as other hikers: worth every step, and checked off one from bucket list!
