Skiing and Snowboarding at Aspen Highlands: A Jewel in Colorado's Ski Crown

Creative Adventure Narrative

If Aspen were a family, Aspen Highlands would be the wild sibling—the one with the untamed spirit, an insatiable thirst for adventure, and a reputation for daring. This is the mountain where skiers and snowboarders come to test their mettle, to carve down legendary steeps, and to earn bragging rights at après-ski.

The day begins with a palpable energy. Highlands has a way of drawing a devoted crowd—locals and seasoned travelers who know that this isn’t just another resort. A ride up the Exhibition Lift offers a front-row view of what’s in store: challenging trails, epic bowls, and the promise of fresh powder. Intermediates find their rhythm on blue cruisers like Broadway and Meadows, their wide-open lines begging for playful carving.

But it’s the advanced terrain that sets Highlands apart. The Steeplechase area is a masterclass in steep skiing, where narrow chutes and technical descents test the limits of even the most confident riders. And then, there’s Highland Bowl—the crown jewel. This isn’t just a ski run; it’s a rite of passage. The hike-to terrain is an ascent of about 45 minutes, but at the summit, the reward is pure magic: a 360-degree view of the Elk Mountains and a descent that feels like flying, with powder so deep it swallows your edges.

Back at the base, the Highlands Alehouse buzzes with the electric hum of post-run stories. Cheeks are flushed, legs are heavy, and the sense of camaraderie is contagious. Aspen Highlands doesn’t just offer a day on the slopes—it serves up an experience that stays with you long after the snow melts.

The view at Maroon Bells is beyond breathtaking. I think my picture do not do justice to it. We made our way there by booking the shuttle tickets online and we drove up to park at the garage for USD42/entry day. From there the shuttle ride is about 30 mins with great view and narration of the view that you are looking. Arriving at drop off is only a mere 5 mins walk to the lake and the view of Maroon Bells in all its glory. Awesome. You can choose to take hike on the various trails available.

This mountain has a really interesting layout as it is linear and follows a long ridge. I love the variety of runs, and the pictures are perfect for snowboarder wants to go fast and just have a blast. The highlight for me was hiking the ridge and dropping down into their bowl. Phenomenal snow even 3 days after a storm.

Skied the Aspen Highlands on the last weekend of the ski season. Not all of the expert terrain was opened. The snow wasn't great either unless you stuck to the groomers, but I did recognize how fast, narrow, and beautiful this mountain is. There are also tons of great tree and steep expert level skiing here as well. We haven't tried Buttermilk yet (it's mostly beginner terrain and park skiing), but we can all say that Snowmass, Ajax, and the Highlands are how we would rank the Aspen Snowmass mountains. All three mountains are tons of fun, making Aspen Snowmass our favorite ski area in the country, everything considered.

That steep Highlands Bowl! Hike up (to 12.3K) & have fun cruising back down. No snowcat running on my visit, but it’s only a quick little lap around the bottom of the hike. From the top of Loge Peak lift (11675 ft) it’s about 700 vertical feet to hike to the summit. The first stretch you can glide down before taking off your skis/board & de-layering for the hike. Seems like 30/45 min would be a fast hike and 1-1:15 is a little slower pace to reach the summit depending on your fitness and acclimatization to the elevation. Overall great runs and steep terrain. Did some laps on the runs after hiking & skiing the bowl. Love this place and wish I could visit more often. Not much for greens. If you like it steep, go here and Snowmass.
