Splendid but challenging hike. Very very very wet and slippery. Be prepared to walk through and around puddles and fend off bugs. The views of the canyon and waterfalls are rewarding. The trail is well marked.

The trail hiking might take longer than you thought. It is a good trail with access to water falls. However, mosquitoes can be overwhelming and bug repellents don’t work. The trail is not recommended for people lacking plenty effective mosquitoe repellents Maybe a colder time will be better.

I listed this as hard because for a beginner hiker like myself, it was difficult. We started from the Screw Auger side of the trail, crossed the river, and hiked up the rim trail to buttermilk falls. The view down to the water, the view across to the other side of the gorge, it is a lot to take in and it was my favorite activity of our entire 5 day trip. We swam a couple of times and the majestic nature of where we were was totally worth it. There were parts of the trail where you have to climb for long periods of time. There are very steep areas, logs to walk across, and moments where you are climbing up vertical areas using roots and footholds. I tripped and fell at one point, and overall was not prepared for the intensity, but my boyfriend had no issue with endurance so I think if you're in moderately good shape, you'll be fine. One thing I wish we'd done was plan an all day trip and to the entire loop. There was so much we didn't get to see because we had to be in Bangor that night.

Gulf Hagas is an awesome hiking and recreational area. The hike from end to end is roughly 6 miles and has some difficult but doable spots. Along this beautiful hike you come across 7 different waterfalls and gorges. Gulf Hagas is just outside greenville through a woods gate you have to check in with and pay usage fee. There are beautiful views after beautiful views along the hole way. You can access from both ends and walk up or down the river. Lots of nice swimming hole for the kids or adults to enjoy. Bring plenty of water to drink because it is a long day. One of my favorite spots in maine.

One of the best trails ever, but not for the faint of heart (or feet). Lower lot / trailhead not reachable from Greenville in August 2023 due to planned road improvements.
