Ultimate 3-Day Mountain Biking Itinerary in Moab, Utah

Moab, Utah, is a mountain biking utopia renowned for its stunning landscapes and diverse trail options. If you're planning a trip in December, you’ll be greeted by crisp air, breathtaking views of the red rock formations, and fewer crowds, making it a perfect time to explore. Average temperatures range from the mid-20s to mid-50s Fahrenheit, but be prepared for possible snow or rain. Days tend to be sunny, which is stabilizing, but nights can get chilly, so dress in layers. The trails mostly remain accessible, but check local conditions, as some higher elevations may be closed due to weather.

Throughout your stay, you can expect to ride on some of the world’s best trails while immersing yourself in Moab’s rich history, which is tied to Native American culture and the mining boom of the early 20th century. Here’s a practical guide to your three days of adventure.

Day 1: Slickrock Bike Trail

Morning

  • Start your day with a hearty breakfast at Moab Diner, famous for its breakfast burritos.
  • Head to the Slickrock Bike Trail, a 10.5-mile loop that offers breathtaking views and unique rock formations.

Local Knowledge

  • Trail Difficulty: Intermediate to Advanced due to steep climbs and technical sections.
  • Interesting Fact: The Slickrock formation is not made of concrete; it's actually a mix of Navajo sandstone and geological uplift, which means it provides excellent grip for biking.

Directions

  • From Moab, it’s just a 10-minute drive (about 4 miles) via Slickrock Trail Road.

Afternoon

  • Enjoy a packed lunch while taking in the view from the top of the ridge.
  • After lunch, explore more of the area by descending into the lower sections of the trail for a different perspective.

Evening

  • Dine at Zax Restaurant & Watering Hole for gourmet pizza and local beers.
  • Check out local shops for biking gear or souvenirs.

Day 2: Porcupine Rim

Morning

  • Fuel up with breakfast at The Broken Oar, known for its coffee and pastries.
  • Today, tackle the Porcupine Rim Trail, a popular 15-mile singletrack featuring stunning views of the Colorado River.

Local Knowledge

  • Trail Difficulty: Intermediate. Be wary of the steep drops, particularly if you've not experienced such heights before.
  • Interesting Fact: This trail was first used by the Ute indigenous people, who traversed this beautiful landscape long before current routes were established.

Directions

  • The trailhead is about a 30-minute drive (approximately 15 miles) via Highway 128.

Afternoon

  • Take a break at the valley overlook that provides exhilarating views of the canyon below.
  • Make your way to the popular Maggie’s Grave, a historical site on the trail for those interested in local tales.

Evening

  • After a rewarding day, unwind at Desert Bistro, offering fine dining with a local twist.
  • Stroll through the town center for live music events or local markets often held during December.

Day 3: The Whole Enchilada

Morning

  • Breakfast from Moab Coffee Company offers caffeine and pastries to energize your day.
  • Today’s highlight is The Whole Enchilada Trail, a 26-mile descent that begins at Burro Pass and ends at Porcupine Rim.

Local Knowledge

  • Trail Difficulty: Advanced; you should be ready for technical descents and varying terrain.
  • Interesting Fact: This trail was reputedly created by local mountain bikers who wanted to showcase the beauty of the area in one epic ride.

Directions

  • A 45-minute drive (about 25 miles) to the Burro Pass Trailhead via Dome Plateau Road is necessary to start your adventure.

Afternoon

  • Enjoy a packed lunch along the trail, making sure to stay hydrated; the descent can be strenuous.
  • Make it a point to stop by the well-known views of the La Sal Mountains.

Evening

  • Celebrate the end of your biking trip with dinner at The Sunset Grill, which offers great views and a relaxing atmosphere to recap your adventures.
  • If you have any energy left, check out some local breweries like Moab Brewery for a celebratory drink.

Make sure you have adequate gear, warm clothing, and hydration packs, as the December weather can vary. Safety first—enjoy your biking adventure in stunning Moab!

I’m. It sure if they allow dirt bikes anymore but we had a great time. Place is clean with great directions. Once you get there you can connect to different trailheads. Very nice crowd and good camp spot as well

An amazingly grueling ride! Views are fantastic and the experience can't be replicated. I would highly recommend at least 75 ounces of water. We rode it in July starting at 8:30am. By the last 1 hour, the heat escalates quite a bit! I would recommend starting no later than 7:30. Very difficult. I would say it's doable by most kids who have ridden at least 1 year of NICA.

Very fun trail but not for the novice rider. Greg and give a 2 ish hour buffer before sunset as the trail gets tricky after dark. (Not fun but a good story). Walking your bike is very normal and regular yet frustrating. You’ll feel it in your legs the next day though.

The Moab Slickrock Trail has quickly become one of my favorite mountain bike rides! This trail offers a challenging technical experience, with steep climbs and tight, rocky switchbacks that will test your skills. One great feature is that electric-assist mountain bikes are allowed, making it accessible for a wider range of riders. The stunning vistas along the trail had us frequently stopping to snap photos. We chose to ride during sunset, transitioning into the night with bike lights, which was nothing short of magical. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the changing light highlighted the unique rock formations, transforming the landscape before our eyes. The way the rocks shifted colors and shadows in the fading light was an unforgettable sight. If you're looking for a trail that offers both technical riding and breathtaking scenery, the Moab Slickrock Trail is a must-ride!

Such a fun trail! My 13 year old son and I conquered this trail recently. It's (11) fairly difficult miles round-trip. Weather can and often changes on a dime. No matter what - always bring more water than you think you'll need. Be sure to consider having an extra chain, tube, etc. Very technical trail with multiple spots that, depending on your skill level, may require walking your bike. Overall a 10 out of 10 experience.
