Where Anchorage ends and the wilderness starts, the Chugach rises with old mountain hearts. Sharp ridges reach upward through silver and blue, while valleys roll green beneath every view. Hike into hemlock, through willow and pine, where berry-filled pathways twist, climb, and wind. A moose may move softly, a grizzly may roam, for every wild creature is walking through home. The sheep scale the cliffs with impossible feet, while eagles ride circles where sky and stone meet. Below, hidden waters run icy and clear, singing old mountain songs only still hearts can hear. In summer, fireweed paints purple and rose; in winter, deep silence arrives with the snow. Then northern lights wander through midnight above, green ribbons of wonder the dark heavens love. Come ready for weather, for wind, rain, and snow; tell someone your route and the way you will go. Pack water, bear spray, and layers to spare, for Alaska is lovely but asks you to care. Take nothing but pictures, leave wild things alone, for the trail is a guest room in somebody’s home. Pack out every wrapper and tread gently through; let the next weary traveler find the same view. The Chugach is freedom with mountains for walls, where thunder rolls deep and a lone raven calls. A wild place beside us, yet worlds far away, where the body grows tired and the spirit can stay. Thanks for the miles, the memories, and view, for the old Army days and those skies I once knew. Though years may move onward and old pathways part, the Chugach still marches through this wanderer’s heart. Peace. Piece. Peaks.
