About This Adventure Destination

Tucked beneath the towering majesty of the Maroon Bells, the Crater Lake Trail is not just a hike—it’s a journey into the heart of Colorado’s wilderness. Every step of the 3.6-mile out-and-back trail feels like peeling back a layer of natural wonder, revealing landscapes that could be plucked from a dream.

The adventure begins at the Maroon Lake Trailhead, where the Maroon Bells—two impossibly photogenic peaks—stand as proud sentinels of the valley. The trail wastes no time delivering on its promises, winding through a dense aspen forest that shimmers in golden hues during the fall. As your boots crunch over roots and rocks, the sounds of the world fall away, replaced by the rustling leaves and the faint whisper of mountain breezes.

The climb is moderate but steady, with rocky sections keeping things interesting. Around every bend, a new view emerges: the crystal waters of Maroon Lake reflecting the Bells, alpine meadows teeming with wildflowers in summer, and jagged cliffs rising like ancient fortresses.

When you reach Crater Lake, the reward is breathtaking. Nestled at the base of the Maroon Bells, the lake is a mirror-like expanse that captures the peaks and sky in perfect symmetry. The water’s edge is strewn with boulders, making it an ideal spot to rest, soak in the beauty, and snap photos that will ignite envy among your friends.

Crater Lake is another picturesque lake in the Maroon Bells area, located at the foot of granite peaks. It is reached by a trail starting at Maroon Lake. Described as moderately difficult, approximately 1.8 ml in one direction. We came across foxes again, one was running with a squirrel in its mouth, the other was hunting. Crater Lake is beautiful too, we spent some time there.

It's a 2hr return hike. Easy/ medium grade as it's full of rocks. The lake is almost dried up right now but the views of the mountains are well worth the hike

Not to be missed if you go to Aspen, it is mandatory, you pay parking and the truck takes you to the road that takes you directly to the lake, it is better to get there by car, the truck passes every 15 and 20 minutes, it is very good, for photos and enjoy the landscape, you can go to a certain point in a wheelchair, the path is even
