For a dedicated trail runner, the White River National Forest is an absolute paradise and an unmatched training ground. Running here most days offers a rugged, high-altitude challenge that keeps you sharp, with endless terrain that never gets old. The sheer variety of trails—ranging from punishing vertical climbs up steep mountain ridges to smooth, winding singletrack through dense aspen groves and pine forests—provides everything an endurance athlete needs to build serious strength. ​Beyond the intense physical workout, the rewards are spectacular. Crushing a tough ascent to be greeted by sweeping alpine vistas, crystal-clear mountain lakes, and pristine wilderness makes the burning lungs entirely worth it. The trail network is incredibly expansive and beautifully maintained, allowing for short mid-week maintenance loops or massive, multi-hour weekend long runs. Training at these elevations is no joke, but there is simply no better place to log your daily miles and connect with the raw beauty of the Rocky Mountains. It is a world-class outdoor playground right in our backyard.

We backpacked in to the Nicholson Creek area and then went off-trail to a campsite right beside Hunter's Creek. We spread my father-in-law's ashes atop one of the highest peaks in the area. It was tough climbing but so breathtaking. I think the highest elevation we reached was around 11,000 feet. We could see the Maroon Bells off to our right but really we had a 360 degree view of the mountain range. If you love nature and off-trail hiking, I can't recommend this area enough!

This is a beautiful spot in the continental divide. It is wonderful in all seasons. The wind is usually high up there so pack accordingly.
