Stretching between Snowmass Village and Buttermilk Mountain, this 15.8-mile point-to-point trail offers an epic blend of technical challenges, high-alpine beauty, and flowy singletrack that keeps riders coming back for more.

The journey begins with a climb through fragrant pine forests and groves of shimmering aspens, their golden leaves glowing in fall. The trail wastes no time testing your mettle, with rocky sections and root-filled switchbacks demanding focus and skill. As you gain elevation, the views open up, revealing sweeping vistas of the Elk Mountains and the Roaring Fork Valley. It’s the perfect excuse to pause, catch your breath, and take it all in.

This trail, along with the Summit Trail, are two of my favorite hiking trails in Snowmass. I took the Elk Camp Gondola to the top and then entered this trail below the gondola off of the Vista Trail. The Government Trail cuts you all the way across the mountain and leaves you off near the Snowmass Mall. It's a fantastic 1.5-hour hike!
