Tucked where the Baraboo bluffs bump, bend, and rise, lies a rocky little rift hiding under the skies. Past fern, root, and woodland crest, water carved a wonder called Pewit’s Nest. Rush through the rock, splash through the slot, cold creek curling through a sandstone spot. Swirl it, twirl it, tumble downstream, polishing stone with a shimmering gleam. Cliffs squeeze close while the cool water runs, far from the highways, hurry, and hums. Moss on the rocks, roots gripping the ground, water keeps whispering its wonderful sound. Drip-drop, slip-slop, ripple and roll, Mother Nature’s been digging one heck of a hole. Not with a shovel, a pick, or a plea, just water plus rock plus eternity. But tread with respect where the sandstone stands, stay where permitted and mind where you land. Fragile little places don’t heal overnight, so leave only footprints where footsteps are right. Wander and wonder, but wander with care, there’s ancient Wisconsin written everywhere. Rock tells the story, water does the rest, carving through time at Pewit’s Nest. Peace. Piece. Peas.
