Mount Liamuiga

Great hike up to the rim of Liamuiga. Didn’t have enough time to summit…so we gotta come back! Great experience with incredible beauty. Strenuous hike for anyone not accustomed to hiking in the tropics. Phenomenal experience with good guides.

Do not book this hike with WelcometoSaintKitts Agency One of the most disappointing and poorly managed excursions I have ever booked. Their website advertises groups of maximum 15 people. We were 20. Most of the group were cruise ship passengers who had to be back at the port by a specific time, and the entire excursion was consequently rushed around their schedule. What makes this particularly unacceptable is that I had specifically told the company that we were staying on the island until the 25th and could go any day except one. I also spoke to another American couple in our group who were staying until the 25th as well. We could easily have formed part of a smaller group on another day. Instead, we were all packed into this group of 20. The consequences completely ruined the experience. Because the group was so large and fitness levels were very different, we only visited one of the two volcano viewpoints we were expecting to visit. We were repeatedly told there was no time because we needed to get the cruise passengers back to port. After making it to the top, we had around FIVE MINUTES to enjoy the view and take pictures before being rushed back down. There was also virtually no explanation whatsoever about the volcano, its geology, history or what we were seeing. I paid for a guided volcano experience, not an expensive workout followed by five minutes to take a picture. And then came the transportation. Our driver was a lovely woman and I have absolutely nothing against her personally. She picked us up in a perfectly fine vehicle, but for the return journey we were put into a different car which she herself described as “a banger.” The car overheated on the way back. We had to stop on the roadside and I literally had to help hold the bonnet open while she poured water into the reservoir so that we could continue. You genuinely couldn’t make this up. I complained immediately and requested a full refund. I was told I would be called back and then heard nothing for hours, leaving me to chase them again. This wasn’t simply a tour that “didn’t meet my expectations.” Key elements of the experience advertised were not delivered: the stated maximum group size was exceeded, the excursion was rushed to accommodate cruise ship schedules, we did not get the full experience we expected, and the return vehicle overheated on the road. I travel extensively and very rarely leave reviews like this, but this experience warrants one. I absolutely would not recommend this company.

Absolutely fantastic hike but definitely not for beginners and perhaps even borderline for intermediates. Lots of tree root and rock climbing and always damp/wet conditions with lots of slippery mud. Unfortunately the peak is very underwhelming because of the vast amount of vegetation that obstructs the view of most of the volcanoe's inner details. If you decide to get a guide which I would recommend "Bad ass" Oneil is the GOAT at 70 years old and every other guide knows it. He's been doing this for 40+ years and is absolutely amazing!
