The Valley Loop Trail begins at the Bobcat Ridge trailhead, located about 11 miles west of Fort Collins. The trail is well-marked and provides a gentle ascent, making it suitable for hikers of varying skill levels. Its mix of grasslands, foothills, and shaded areas ensures great variety along the route.

Key Highlights Along the Trail: • Prairie Grasslands: The initial stretch of the trail winds through wide-open prairie, offering impressive views of red rock formations and distant peaks. This is an excellent spot for birdwatching, with frequent sightings of meadowlarks and raptors like hawks. • Forest Grove Section: About halfway through, the trail meanders into a forested area with pockets of shade and wildflowers during spring and summer. Mule deer are commonly spotted here. • Historic Homestead Site: Near the north end of the loop, there’s a preserved homestead cabin and informational signage detailing the area’s early settler history. It’s a great place to take a break and snap photos.

Trail Amenities: The trail features interpretive signs, benches at key viewpoints, and a restroom facility at the parking area. There’s also a wide, gravel-paved path leading into the loop, ensuring accessibility for families.

The area is part of a historic ranching region, and its combination of grasslands and ponderosa pine forests showcases the dramatic ecological transition between prairies and foothills. It’s also a habitat for black bears and bobcats, though encounters are rare.
