Sugar Mountain: The High Country’s Ultimate Downhill Biking Escape

Family fun!

Good location for Eastern US. Certainly not on par with larger resorts, but good for the area. Best for new skiers; very little advanced terrain and the limited number of runs gets repetitive for more experienced skiers. Busy on holidays and weekends. Not too bad on weekdays and for night skiing. Biggest negative experience is that snow making machines run 24/7 if temps are low enough. Very loud and unpleasant to ski through. It's a significantly more enjoyable experience here on days at or just warmer than freezing. Recommend picking up a reloadable pass evening before and purchase daily tickets online to avoid lengthy lines at ticket counter. Show up early if you want parking.

Do not rent here. You'll grow old and hate the trip.

Great descents and good conditions.

We went to Sugar Mountain on January 6th in a group of 4 adults and 4 children, including a 2-year-old. We arrived around 11:30 AM and faced a long line at the ticket counters. I informed the staff that we had never skied before and that we wanted to take skiing lessons. They directed us to go directly to the ski school. When we got there, they told us we first needed to rent the equipment at another location. We went to the rental area and put on the ski boots. Then, we were asked if we had lift passes. We said no and made the payment, believing that the staff member had included the passes. However, this was not the case. We went upstairs to pay for the child’s lift pass, but they asked for one of the adult lift passes. We had to go back downstairs to get the card from the adults who were watching the other children. When we returned, we were informed that the lift pass payment had not been processed correctly. Once again, we went back downstairs to resolve the issue and discovered that the rental staff member had only charged us for the equipment, not the lift passes. After many setbacks, we finally managed to purchase the child’s lift pass. We returned to the ski school, only to be told there were no more lessons available for the day. Since we had never skied before, it was impossible to start on our own, especially with children. We left frustrated around 4:00 PM. At the equipment rental, they told us they could transfer the passes and equipment to the next day, but we needed to go to the office again. There, they asked us to fill out a form explaining what had happened and promised a response within two days. I called after this period, but they gave me a new deadline of seven days. It has now been 14 business days, and we still haven’t received a response. The next day, we purchased new ski passes and discovered that both these passes and the ones from the previous day were only valid until 4:30 PM. Even if ski lessons had been available, we wouldn’t have been able to use the passes due to the closing time. It was an extremely frustrating experience with a total lack of organization, poorly informed staff, and no customer support. I do not recommend it.
