About This Adventure Destination

Bear Peak, towering above the city of Boulder in Colorado’s Front Range, offers one of the most impressive outdoor experiences in the region. Rising to 8,459 feet, this rugged mountain stands out for its challenging trails combined with sweeping views of the city and the surrounding Rocky Mountain wilderness. Popular with locals and visitors, Bear Peak is a true highlight of Boulder's outdoor landscape.

The landscape features dense forests of ponderosa pines that give way to rocky ridges and outcroppings unique to this part of the Rockies. Along the trails, hikers encounter signs of native wildlife, including golden eagles and chipmunks, adding life to the journey. The climb is physically demanding, with significant elevation gain that rewards adventurers with panoramic vistas from the summit. The last stretch requires a bit of rock scrambling, making the peak a favorite for those who appreciate a solid challenge and satisfying payoff.

Historically, Bear Peak has been a landmark for indigenous peoples and later settlers during the 19th century, who used these rugged trails as critical routes. Its proximity to Boulder has integrated Bear Peak into the community’s identity as a go-to outdoor destination for fitness and nature lovers. Seasonal changes bring out diverse wildflowers in spring and vibrant aspens in the fall, enhancing its natural beauty.

Whether approached via the steep Fern Canyon Trail or other routes, Bear Peak offers a combination of strenuous hiking, impressive ecological variety, and breathtaking summit views that firmly establish it as a must-visit landmark in the Boulder area.

Hiked it from the Ncar trailhead. Done this hike numerous times and it is always a great time. The trail gets pretty steep once you turn west but it's not too bad. Bring spikes if going anytime from December to April-ish because ice stays in the shadows for a while. Enjoy the great views in every direction

Echoing what others have said, incredible views that are well worth the trek up!! Trails are well-maintained and easy to follow. It is a tough climb compared to other hikes in the area though so be prepared for it to take a few hours and follow the standard advice of bringing plenty of water. We started from NCAR and took the Fern Canyon Trail, and the last mile or so is *very* steep (~1500 ft elevation gain) so keep that in mind. Also high enough to get a bit snowy/icy near the top in colder months. Reaching the peak marker proper also requires a bit of a rock scramble, but nothing terrible, and there are even better views and cute chipmunks at that top. Will climb again but we need some rest first!
