Royal Arch Trail Starting near the lake, this moderately challenging hike rewards adventurers with views of the stunning Royal Arch rock formation. It offers a unique experience where campers can enjoy both the rugged terrain and serene lake views.
Lake Isabelle A breathtaking hike from Brainard Lake, leads to Lake Isabelle—a stunning alpine lake. The clear waters reflect the surrounding mountains, creating a perfect backdrop for picnicking or a quick dip. The well-marked trail is about 2.5 miles one way and gains altitude gradually, making it accessible for families.
Brainard Lake is part of the National Forest System, which means it’s governed by specific regulations, including fire restrictions and camping permits. Gold medals have been awarded to this area for its fishing and environmental conservation efforts.
The peak season runs from late June to early September, although fall offers beautiful foliage.
Essential items include a tent, sleeping bag, cooking gear, and hiking boots. Don’t forget sunscreen and plenty of water.
From Boulder, take CO-119 N for approximately 17 miles to Brainard Lake Road. Follow the signs to the campground, which takes about 30 minutes. Camping at Brainard Lake is a chance to enjoy the great outdoors, rich wildlife, and breathtaking views right near Boulder.

Wow! I hiked the Brainerd Gateway Trailhead from the lower parking area October 23, 2024. The gate was closed on the road to the Brainerd Lake parking lot. After hiking about 3 miles you reach the lake. The view of the lake and surrounding mountain peaks is breathtaking and well worth the hike up. I returned to the car via the road which is only about 2 miles and much less demanding than the trail. There is a very large parking lot at the trailhead.
