About This Adventure Destination

Looking Glass Falls is a striking natural attraction located near Brevard in North Carolina’s scenic Pisgah National Forest. This 60-foot waterfall is one of the most accessible and popular in the area, drawing visitors with its impressive cascade directly visible from the roadside. The waterfall’s name comes from nearby Looking Glass Rock, known for its smooth face that shines like a mirror when covered in ice, adding regional charm and uniqueness to the setting.

The waterfall pours over solid granite ledges, a distinctive geological feature characteristic of the Appalachian Mountains. Visitors can admire the crisp, clear waters rushing into a shallow pool below, surrounded by moss-covered rocks and lush greenery typical of the local forest ecosystem. The area hosts diverse plant life and provides a peaceful retreat for people who enjoy the outdoors without needing to trek far from their vehicle. Stairs and viewing platforms allow safe, easy access to the base of the falls, where guests can feel the cool mist and take in detailed views of the water plunging down.

Looking Glass Falls flows steadily throughout the year, offering different experiences in every season—from the vibrant greens of summer to the crystalline ice formations of winter. Historically, the Pisgah National Forest was one of the first national forests in the eastern US, established in 1916, emphasizing conservation and public enjoyment. Many visitors appreciate the inviting atmosphere to relax, take photographs, or picnic by the waterside. While the falls can get busy on nice days, the ample parking and viewpoints keep the experience comfortable for all ages. This waterfall is a remarkable destination that captures the natural beauty and geological intrigue of the southern Blue Ridge Mountains.

The pictures online were beautiful, but nothing compared to seeing it in person. This is a lovely place to visit. Be careful on the rocks near the water, they’re rather slippery. There is a stairway that will take you down to the bottom of the waterfall. You are able to bypass the bottom and explore the water and rocks below. It was a great time! I also got a chuckle of the little toy left in the tree. Maybe perchance the owner will see it and think happy thoughts.
