About This Adventure Destination

Pink Beds Trail Loop is a charming hiking destination located within the Pisgah National Forest near Pisgah Forest, North Carolina. Known for its gently rolling terrain and serene forest environment, this loop stands out as a peaceful retreat showcasing a variety of ecosystems uncommon in the region. The area earns its name from the seasonal pink blooms that cast a soft blush over the open meadow-like pastures, a sight appreciated since pioneer days. The trail offers easy to moderate hiking suitable for families and casual walkers, making it a favorite for nature lovers of all experience levels.

The loop stretches around 5.3 miles, featuring broad forest paths shaded by hardwoods and aromatic rhododendron thickets. One unique feature is the peat bog habitat, where visitors can find distinctive plants such as carnivorous pitcher plants. Several small streams cross the trail, adding to the atmosphere and opportunities to observe local wildlife—white-tailed deer, various bird species, and even occasional black bears. Though it lacks dramatic waterfalls or peaks typical of mountain hikes nearby, the Pink Beds Trail provides a quiet immersion in the rich biodiversity of the Pisgah National Forest.

Historically, the "Pink Beds" referred to the vibrant fields early settlers admired for their soft, pink hues across the grassy lowlands. Along the trail, natural signs of the forest’s health and change invite observers to appreciate the balance of ecosystems here. Visitors often note the ease of the trail combined with moments of wilderness and the refreshing presence of cool forest creeks. This welcoming trail loop offers a blend of gentle exercise and discovery amid the distinctive landscapes of western North Carolina.

One of the more popular Pisgah spots but more or less empty on weekdays. The trail itself is mostly flat but very muddy with a lot of exposed roots. A lot of recent blowdowns to keep in mind as well but other than that, it's a very pretty 5+ mile walk in the woods with a few bridge crossings and some elevated boardwalk things to keep you out of the marsh. Pretty sure I saw a bear print in the mud today too.

Still a great trail. Has some storm damage but nothing unmanageable. New sign with actual distance of 5.3 miles for the whole loop or 3.6 with the shortcut. Can get very muddy so wear appropriate boots if it's been raining. Update as of 8/16 the shortcut trail to cut the looped to 3.2 miles is closed on both sides for repairs. You'll either have to turn around or go the full 5.3 miles. But, all of the bridges on the pink beds looped are all repaired from Helene damage.

Parking and picnic area are great. Trails well marked, was raining a lot when we went so the boarded trail areas were really slick. Would come back later in the year when cooler and drier.
