Fishing on the West Fork: The West Fork of the Pigeon River flows adjacent to the campground, offering excellent opportunities for fishing. This river is stocked with rainbow, brook, and brown trout, making it an angler's paradise. The surrounding dense tree canopy provides shade and cooler temperatures, enhancing the experience on warm summer days.

Access to Black Balsam Knob: A short drive from the campground, the trailhead to Black Balsam Knob provides access to one of the best high-altitude hiking experiences in the region. Known for its balds (open mountaintop meadows), this hike offers unparalleled views of Pisgah National Forest and its surroundings. The trail itself winds through varying terrains, perfect for seasoned hikers seeking a challenge.

Sunburst Campground was originally the location of the Sunburst Logging Village, established in the early 1900s. While the village no longer remains, its history adds depth to the area's rustic charm.

The Pigeon River’s name originates from the once-abundant passenger pigeons that migrated through the region before their extinction in the early 20th century.

The best time to camp is late spring through early fall when the temperatures are mild but traffic on roads and trails is manageable.

From Brevard, take US-276 North. After approximately 24 miles, turn left onto NC-215. The campground is about 9 miles up the road.
