Courthouse Valley Overlook is located along NC 215, roughly 7 miles north of the Blue Ridge Parkway. At an elevation exceeding 4,000 feet, the views here capture layers of rolling Appalachian hills, dense forests, and on a clear day, horizon-line ridges that seem endless. The overlook provides a perfect rest area for travelers along the scenic byway and a front-row seat to seasonal changes, especially during the fall when the mountains transform into hues of red, orange, and gold.

The overlook is perfectly situated for catching the sunrise lighting up the valley, as soft morning rays cut through the low-lying mist. Alternatively, the overlook offers exceptional sunset views, as the fading daylight paints the landscape in rich, golden tones. Bring a camera or binoculars to enhance your experience.

Just a short drive away is the trailhead for Courthouse Falls, a gorgeous nearby waterfall that pairs excellently with a visit to the overlook. This waterfall hike is accessible yet rewarding, featuring a 1.5-mile trek through lush forest.

The overlook gets its name from Courthouse Rock, a massive granite formation visible from the viewpoint. Native lore and early settlers often named locations for visual or symbolic similarities, and the rock’s courthouse-like appearance earned its title.
