About This Adventure Destination

Newton Hills State Park in Canton, South Dakota, is a distinctive outdoor destination offering a vibrant mix of rugged wilderness and gentle rolling hills. This park stands out in the region due to its dense hardwood forests filled with basswood, oak, and hickory trees that create a lush green canopy not often found in eastern South Dakota. Visitors encounter a peaceful setting where forested trails wind through intriguing prehistoric geological formations dating back before the Ice Age. Along these paths, birdwatchers enjoy spotting diverse native species making the park a favored spot for wildlife observation.

Beyond natural beauty, Newton Hills holds cultural significance, as remnants of the prehistoric Woodland Indian culture have been uncovered there, adding a fascinating historical layer to the visitor experience. Open since 1970, the park thoughtfully balances recreational opportunities with preservation. Trails range from easy to challenging, including some hilly sections that reward visitors with scenic viewpoints. While the park’s small lake has unfortunately dried up, reducing water-related activities, the surrounding meadows and forest streams provide serene spots for picnicking and quiet reflection.

Equestrian visitors appreciate designated horse trails—a rare feature for state parks in this part of South Dakota. Campers can choose from well-maintained electric sites, rustic cabins, or secluded tent spots, enjoying moments away from the digital bustle with limited cell service. The friendly staff is often noted for their helpfulness and welcoming attitude. Seasonal colors in spring and fall enhance the park’s visual appeal, making it a refreshing destination for day visits or overnight stays in the southeastern South Dakota region.

Editorial Assessment

It was unexpected to have to pay to use a state park. In MO the ones around us are free. But, that being said, it was a beautiful and peaceful place to stop for a picnic lunch! It was a bit off of i29 but we'll worth it to relax a hot minute and let the kids run. Even with the Folk Fest that was going on it was very peaceful!
