About This Adventure Destination

Lorax Trail offers a distinctive outdoor experience just outside Carbondale in the Roaring Fork Valley of Colorado. This 3.2-mile path provides a blend of natural beauty and moderate challenge, all framed by striking views of Mount Sopris, a towering peak that dominates the landscape. The trail’s winding route travels through Pinyon-Juniper woodlands and pockets of dense forest, creating a cool, shaded environment that is refreshing during warm months.

A remarkable feature of Lorax Trail is its combination of varied terrain: from a steep rocky climb near the start to smoother, flowy sections that are ideal for trail running or casual hiking. Red rock formations add visual interest, while wildflower patches bloom seasonally, pleasing photographers and outdoor lovers alike. Wildlife sightings, including elk and diverse birds, are common, enhancing the sense of connection to nature.

This trail sits adjacent to White River National Forest, adding to the richness of the surrounding wilderness. The area holds significance for the Ute tribes, whose historical presence and stories enrich the cultural backdrop. Visitors can choose a shorter lollipop loop roughly halfway through the hike or venture onward for a longer experience, though the path becomes less defined beyond this point.

Lorax Trail is well-maintained but requires awareness of seasonal conditions, especially during mud season when the route can become slippery or icy. Families, seasoned hikers, and trail runners appreciate its accessibility combined with the region’s rugged charm, making it a noteworthy destination for enjoying Colorado’s mountain landscapes.

Great hiking trail outside of Carbondale, CO. Just hiked it this morning (3/2/25). DON'T go now. Mud season has started and the trail is almost all mud or ice. Not a fun day on the Lorax!!

Steep rocky climb at first, but relatively easy after that. Picked up a flat on dry ranch road on the way in.
