About This Adventure Destination

Waterfall Trail at Sendero Cascadas Escondidas

Sendero Cascadas Escondidas is a captivating natural spot near Chaitén, in the Los Lagos region of Chile. Known for its lush green surroundings and striking waterfalls, this trail offers a unique chance to witness the raw beauty of southern Chilean wilderness. The most remarkable features here are the twin waterfalls that plunge dramatically into a clear pool surrounded by moss-covered rocks and dense native vegetation. The area is characterized by volcanic soil and rocks, remnants of past eruptions that shaped the terrain. This creates a rugged landscape where water meets rock in powerful, serene contrasts.

The moss and ferns that cover much of the trail area create a vibrant, almost enchanted forest vibe. Birdlife is abundant with local species adding to the natural soundscape alongside the roar of falling water. The trail is moderately challenging, perfect for visitors seeking a rewarding nature walk without a strenuous climb.

A key cultural note is the region’s connection to the 2008 Chaitén volcanic eruption, after which nature here is in a stage of remarkable recovery. This makes the site not only beautiful but also significant in terms of ecological regeneration.

For visitors seeking a peaceful, photogenic location amid Chile's stunning southern wilderness, Sendero Cascadas Escondidas offers a rare and beautiful experience. It’s a must-see for anyone exploring the Los Lagos region looking to spend quality time in pristine surroundings away from crowds.

Editorial Assessment

This location stands out for its beautiful waterfalls and lush environment in a volcanic region recovering from past natural events. It provides an excellent hiking experience with swimming and wildlife observation options. However, it remains relatively less known internationally and is more of a regional natural gem than a globally iconic destination.

Beautiful, the road is in bad condition (which makes it even more beautiful), very wild. The waterfall above inspired me to propose right there.

Trail is closed but good place to sleep after the ferry. We found shelter under one of the structures which was nice to escape the rain. Ranger came by in the morning to collect the fee for camping. Water and flush toilets, and there were showers with only cold water. Could hear the sound of river, frogs, and rain while sleeping!
