The Waterfall Trail begins at the Compton Trailhead, approximately 4 miles north of Ponca along the Buffalo National River. This 2.3-mile out-and-back trail is renowned for its dramatic steep descent that leads to Hemmed-In Hollow, home to a spectacular 209-foot waterfall—the tallest waterfall between the Rockies and the Appalachians. The descent offers hikers unparalleled views of towering bluffs and lush valleys.

Why It's Special The waterfall is a seasonal feature, most impressive after periods of heavy rainfall when water cascades dramatically into the hollow below. The sound of rushing water accompanied by native bird songs creates a tranquil atmosphere. You’ll also pass smaller rock formations and delicate streams along the route.

Trail Characteristics and Amenities The trail is rated as difficult due to its steep incline and rocky terrain. It’s essential for hikers to be prepared for the return journey, as the hike back is entirely uphill. There are no water fountains, signage, or restrooms, so plan accordingly.
