Awesome location and interesting house and gardens. The cafe is excellent, if a little expensive... Worth it.

Very pretty place, we weren't sure what to expect, but really enjoyed walking around especially the gardens.

Great destination! Enjoyed the open trail and peaceful outdoor atmosphere.

The Terrace cafe is not only pricy but has the worst loyalty card I've ever come across. 1 stamp per transaction. That's right buy 10 coffees and get 1 stamp. So if there's more than one of you order and pay separately.

John Ruskin made Brantwood his home from 1872 until he died in 1900. The painter, writer, geologist, art critic and architect loved nature and this shows throughout the house and gardens. The house is partly open with four rooms downstairs including entrance hall (off the gift shop), small living room, large living room with side room and library, study and large dining room. All furniture was either owned by Ruskin or in contemporaneous with the period. There is a grand piano in the large living room that visitors can play! His study was my favourite with minerals and shells he collected and bookcases filled with books he wrote or were in his collection. Upstairs are two small bedrooms including Ruskin’s with his exquisite turret he had built that is room enough for one chair to sit and gaze at 180 degree vista of mountains. Onsite there are separate block of toilets and cafe. Reasonable amount of parking adjacent to house. Lots of walks through gardens down at the lakeside with the small harbour he built for his rowing boat. Up the hill are various walks from the ziggy zag walk based on Dante’s Divine Comedy up to woodland walks. Highly recommended.
