Emerald Wonders of Colorado

I'm a local elopement photographer, so I've photographed elopements at Emerald Lake and have picked up a few insider tips along the way! Here's the must-know information if you're considering getting married at Emerald Lake near Crested Butte: **PRIVACY:** Emerald Lake has become one of the more popular spots around Crested Butte for engagement sessions and elopements, especially during wildflower season and fall colors, so you should expect to see other photographers, hikers, and visitors around throughout the day. The good news is that there are plenty of spots around the lake to spread out, and sunrise and sunset are both often surprisingly quiet. **ACCESS:** One of the best things about Emerald Lake is how easy it is to access. The lake sits just a short drive from Crested Butte and requires only a quick walk from the parking area, making it a great option for couples who want alpine scenery without a hike or a rough four-wheel-drive road. Depending on snowpack, the road is typically accessible from late spring through fall. A higher clearance vehicle may be needed as some areas as the road gets washed out and a bit rocky at some points. **PHOTOS:** Emerald Lake is one of those locations that somehow manages to look good in every direction. Between the lake itself, the surrounding peaks, the open meadows, and the aspen groves nearby, there are endless opportunities for portraits. Summer brings wildflowers and lush green hillsides, while fall transforms the area with some incredible golden aspens. **BONUS TIP:** Crested Butte weather can change quickly, especially in the afternoons during July when thunderstorms are common. I almost always recommend sunrise ceremonies here for the calmest conditions, the fewest crowds, and some really beautiful light reflecting off the water and surrounding mountains. If you're looking for a location that combines easy access with classic Crested Butte scenery, Emerald Lake is hard to beat. It has all the ingredients people picture when they think of a Colorado mountain elopement — alpine water, wildflowers, aspens, and big mountain views — all in one place.

This is a beautiful area. Is well worth the short drive from Crescent Butte. Depending on the time of year, a 2 Wheel Drive will easily get you to this off the grid gem.

Never seen anything like this - just within few minutes, landscape changed so much. It was snowing very lightly but sun was there so it was pleasant. The moment we started going towards emerald lake, the area was much colder, harder to drive and looked so different. It was little scary to drive there but it was worth it. It looked out of the world - temperatures were around 31/32F but it looked so picturesque. Everything was calm in the surrounding and it was only nature doing its magic - sprinkling snow all over the mountains. Would really love to visit this place in summer next time.

Make sure to go with 4WD car with high clearance and mane parts of the road gets very narrow but the drive is fun and the lake is pretty nice but smaller than I had anticipated
