Majestic Andes: Nevado Auzangate

We did a tour of the 7 Lakes. And to be honest, this is absolutely beautiful. Beautiful mountain peaks, some with snow. Llamas and alpacas. Lakes in various colors. Small rivers and a small waterfall in the distance. Beware: Travel agencies say: We drive 3 to 3.5 hours from Cusco. Then a flat walk of 3 hours. But it is as follows: It is a 12 km long trek. You cannot call it an ordinary walk. It involves going uphill for quite a while at the beginning. So do not do this if you are not already used to 3400 meters (Cusco) for a few days. And have spent some time at a higher altitude, e.g. 3800m, before going even higher. The risk of headaches and reduced appetite is real. To counteract that somewhat, they use coca tea, coca candies, or chew on coca leaves here. But you can also buy harina de coca, green coca powder, here in a sort of natural food store. You put a scoop of it in warm water in the morning and evening. If you add a tea bag and sugar, it is actually drinkable. I write green because you’d rather stay far away from that other stuff, the white stuff. The trip can easily take 5 hours and is not recommended for people with asthma or bad knees. Tip You can rent a horse, but then you pay on top of what you already paid for the tour. Then, if you are somewhat accustomed to the altitude, it is doable.
