This trail winds through Custer State Park, known for its impressive granite formations that rise dramatically against lush forests. It is one of the few hikes in the area that challenges visitors with a mixture of rocky climbs, shaded creekside paths, and panoramic viewpoints, making it a memorable experience for outdoor lovers in the region.

The trail’s signature granite spires and polished rock faces have been sculpted by wind and water over thousands of years, creating an impressive geological landscape unique to the Black Hills. Dense pine and mixed hardwood forests provide cover for local wildlife such as deer and a variety of bird species, enhancing the feeling of wilderness. The path often follows a gentle creek, offering occasional water crossings and shaded rest spots, especially refreshing on warm days. Historical context enriches the trail: Custer State Park holds significance for Native American tribes, linking the hike to a deeper cultural heritage.

Go counterclockwise. The hike down is a lot of fun but the rest of the hike is honestly mostly mid. Easy on the way down and then slight incline on the way back. The end of the trail is very pretty. This trail starts at Sylvan lake, you have to walk from there to the Sunday Gulch trailhead, about .2 or so miles. Lots of people at the trailhead and parking but only really saw people towards the end and beginning of hike. This is good for kids except the way down with the hand holds wouldn't be good for short or very young children. Restrooms near trailhead. Took us just under 2 hours.

Did this today with my 3 kids (5,9,12) and wife. Great trail! Took a little under 2hrs. We did it clockwise. The last bit up the rocks wasn’t as daunting as we were expecting. We ran into a few people who said counter clockwise was best, but feel you would be traveling up hill most the way going that direction.

This was a very fun trail to hike. Most reviews we read said it was moderate difficulty, but I would say it is hard. You need to be able to make navigate rocks and there are some pretty serious up hill climbs. It would be difficult for young children and dogs. We started with the handrail section, and I would say it would be easier if you did this loop with the handrail section at the end. This trail has a lot of streams, a little water fall, and was a very enjoyable hike.
