The gradual downhill grade makes this route ideal for families or beginners. Plan for around 2–3 hours to complete this section. For a more challenging ride, the section from Damascus to Abingdon offers a quieter, less-traveled route with pastoral landscapes and a mix of downhill and flat terrain. Cyclists pass through small farms and charming rural areas. This section often takes 3–4 hours to complete and is perfect for riders looking for a more leisurely experience with fewer crowds.

Don’t miss Trestle 12, one of the trail’s most photographic spots, and Straight Branch Creek, a perfect spot for a quick rest or picnic. Look out for deer and native wildflowers along the route, as this area is rich in Appalachian biodiversity.
