About This Adventure Destination

Wheeler Geologic Area – Colorado’s Remote Natural Wonder

Located in the San Juan Mountains near Del Norte, Colorado, Wheeler Geologic Area offers a striking display of eroded volcanic rock formations unlike anywhere else in the region. This rugged, remote landscape features jagged spires, cliffs, and pinnacles shaped by wind and water over millions of years. The acidic volcanic ash and tuff rocks create vibrant hues of cream, ochre, and pink that stand in sharp contrast to the dense conifer forests and blue skies above.

Wheeler Geologic Area is part of the Rio Grande National Forest and represents a rare example of a heavily eroded volcanic landscape, with the formations dating back to a volcanic eruption approximately 26 million years ago. The area’s striking geological features include hoodoos, cliffs, and a labyrinth of eroded rock pinnacles. Visitors often remark on the otherworldly atmosphere created by the spire-like rocks rising from the forest floor.

Access is limited by a rugged forest road that often requires a high-clearance or 4WD vehicle, emphasizing the area’s remote, undisturbed nature. This makes it an excellent destination for outdoor enthusiasts willing to embrace a bit of adventure for stunning panoramic views and photo opportunities. The Wheeler Geologic Area is a standout location in southern Colorado for geology lovers and hikers who appreciate quiet, less crowded natural settings with exceptional rock formations.

Editorial Assessment

This site is valued for its unique volcanic rock formations and quiet, rugged setting but is less accessible and less internationally known than top-tier iconic natural landmarks. Its lesser-visited status and remote location give it a special appeal for dedicated outdoor enthusiasts and geology aficionados, earning a strong but not top rating.

I just spent a night at the Wheeler Geologic Aera. Fascinating geology, suggest to camp at the trail just before the rock outcrops. The acess road is mostly fair to easy 4wd, with a few sections of intermediate level through mud puddles and eroded rode. Suggest OHV vehicle, your subaru will not make it. If camping learn how to bury your crap, and bring a tough plastic bag to pick up the toilet paper and trash left behind by other inconsiderate travelers. If any forest service people are listening, there needs to be a controlled burn to get rid of all the beetle kill pine. Geology is stunning!
