Coal Creek doesn’t believe in switchbacks. It climbs straight up the mountain’s spine, demanding steady legs and deep breaths. The higher you go, the more Durango shrinks below, the Animas River cutting through town like a silver thread. About halfway up, the trail reveals its best-kept secret: an unrelenting ridgeline with views that stretch past the La Plata Mountains. This is where the trail’s character shifts. The shade of the forest gives way to open slopes scattered with wildflowers in summer and brittle grass in fall.
